Hoover parent intends to keep N. Canton plant open at least three years, local officials report

Despite the upcoming loss of nearly 300 jobs at the North Canton Hoover Co. plant, local officials said Monday parent company Maytag Corp. reiterated that it intends to honor a contract with local union workers that will keep the facility open for at least the next three years.

Maytag executives met privately with union officials in the morning at the plant and with local government leaders in the afternoon to talk about the future of Hoover. The meetings focused on Maytag’s “competitive struggles,” but there was no discussion about closing the plant, North Canton Mayor David Held said.

“I was encouraged because we know that we are going to have 200 research and development positions working in the plant and 775 union workers continuing to work in our plant,” Held said.

But there’s also plenty of uncertainty.
