ParticipantHi: Glad to find this forum, though I hope, in the nicest possible way, not to be too frequent a visitor 🙂

I appreciate the difficulty of identifying any noise from a written description, but I’ll do my best to be clear. The machine has started knocking very loudly on spin, whether washing or drying, the noise matching the speed of the spinning drum. It’s almost like knuckles on wood. Pressing on the front right top corner of the facia (as you face it), stops it altogether.
We got the same sound when we tipped it forward slightly to move it – just the once each time it was tipped. Taking the top off and just moving the top of the “chassis” very slightly (so the drum is not moving) gives the same noise. Nothing loose is visible, the belt seems to be tensioned OK, there doesn’t seem to be anything flapping about inside.
Obviously the warranty is now into the five-year parts-only section, so we’ll have to pay for labour, but it’s handy just to have some idea what the problem is when we call Hotpoint.
Thanks in advance.

If pressing the facia in stops it, it doesnt suggest a major problem. Maybe a loose weight or even a loose screw in the cabinet. Maybe you could find a cheaper fix here if no parts are needed.

Thanks for the prompt reply. We tipped the machine forward and removed the rear inspection panel and had a good look around but can’t see anything loose. All screws and bolts that we could see appear to be tight. Since we’ve no way of knowing if parts are needed, reckon we’ll give Hotpoint a call after new year because as it’s not even two years old yet we are covered for the parts.

As Hotpoints labour is virtually £90.00, eastlmarks advice is very sound. The possibilty that no parts are required is very high. Also you will almost certainly get a local independant engineer in a third of the time that hotpoint may take to get to you.

Thanks – however, taking the top off and putting it back seems to have cured whatever it was. But we’ll probably look on here for a local repairer if (when? 🙂 ) it does come to that again.
Thanks again for your responses.
