Don`t know if this has been discussed before but anyone got an easy way of removing foreign objects like wood screws and curtain hooks that lodge themselves nicely between the outer tub and inner drum at the front. Sometimes get lucky with a stiff wire hook but normally have to remove back half and heater element just for starters , find this one a nightmare so any suggestions welcome.

    Re: Foreign Objects/Zanussi Drum

I reckon we have all had dealings with this problem and depending on what it is and where it is the job can be a pain in the butt. My own solutions work 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time with the odd percentage seeing a strip down. I try to get the object either to the top or bottom of the inner drum. A lot of the time once its at the top of the drum ( 12 O’clock ) you can use a implement between the inner drum and the tub as there is some latitude to be found which often sees the object dropping into the iner drum where you can retrieve it. If you get the obeject to the bottom I have a tiny long nose plier set that gets hold of the object to pull it out.

I would rather try these approaches as first measures as opposed to a strip down.

If the foreign body is ferrous then try a small magnet, I have one that is on a telescopic arial (£2 onthe local market)
First you have to force a coulple of scwredrivers between the drum and drum front plate, try not to do any damage. This will give you enough of a gap to try and fish out the foreign body. If the object is not magnetic than stick a blob of “blue tack on the end of a long screwdriver and try that. I once used this trick to remove a SPOON, dont ask. If all else fails you will have to take the drum apart, good luck

Take off the sump hose and try to feel the foriegn object. Pass a length of string down through the front plate and out though the sump hose. Fray the end of the string and attach a small piece of blue-tak or something similar to the end of the string. Then try and stick the blue-tak to the foriegn object and pull it out through the front of the machine. I have done this three times successfully.

The other technique that I have tried… with limited success… was to use a vacuum cleaner with the nozzle pushed into my trusty syringe and a length of pressure hose to suck up the foriegn object.

Hi everyone and a slightly late Happy New Year.
I remembered seeing this problem referred to before.
After much searching found a post by farmboy in “What’s the most useful tool in your toolbox?”
He advocates a bit of p/sw tubing if I understand him correctly, though he doesnt say how but I think we can guess. Sounds well worth a try.
PS Any ideas how to get the best from the site search engine?
    Mike.

I ask for a cerial pack. Cut and fold two lengths of card, then work both down either side of the object. Turn the drum, card and object to the top and work obtect down. It can take time but its never failed yet.
    Regards,
    Mike.

    Re: Foreign Objects/Zanussi Drum

Anyone thats ever removed a Zanussi drum will know that the inner drum is extremly thin and kinks* easily. Using maltheviking‘s screwdriver tip will likely kink the front rim badly so I don’t recommend that in all honesty. Put nevertheless the inner drum front will fold in sufficiently to access the broad front lip were all the nails, screws, buckles and brooches sit.

Best to lay the machine on its back to overcome the ‘gravitational effect’ first. Instead of screwdrivers use a ‘4″ brick bolster’ and apply gentle pressure against the inner drum lip enough to access the foreign object with a magnet or wire hook etc!

    * Easy now, don’t kink that drum!!!!!

next time your at the local tip…take a stanley knife with you.
cut down the side of an old f/f and take the long thin door magnet out of it
you can then slide it in between the inner-outer drum…
also easy to store stick to the side of your van etc..

megawats card works well I use a couple of pieces of 6mm t&e cooker cable but for iron Ive got the biggest magnet youve ever seen out of an electric meter hold it on the inside of the tub and drag the penny or nail up to the top the flux works through the drum.

Take a piece of pressure tubing
    Open the door
Feed the pressure tube down between the tub & drum at the 5 o’clock position
Slowly rotate the drum clockwise until the pressure hose reaches near to 12 o’clock position this should have picked up the item & moved it to the top
Now yank the hose out while holding your hand underneath
The item should fall into your hand

You may need to do the above a few times and may be easier to take the seal off but this never fails, i’ve removed screws, broaches even a back door key using this method. Any attempt to force the drum will just bend it out of shape.

Should solid gold information like this ever be allowed to get out into the public domain? After all there would be little chance of them hurting themselves. Mind you, it’s effectively already out there once the customer has seen you using it.
And has anyone got any good tips on how to get the best out of the site search engine or do I have to start a new topic?

Don`t know about you Mike but they don`t learn many of my tricks because I ask them to “leave me to get on with it” 😆 and I`ll give them a shout when the job is done.
On a serious note I rarely let a customer stand and watch over me and I`m always slightly vague , without being rude , if I think they`re looking for tips to do it themselves next time.

Thanks for all the interesting replies.

I hate to say this, but I never got an object removed
from one of these without a stripdown.

    Perhaps I’m just unlucky!

Please correct if I am wrong but are these pages not just restricted to the trade?

Martin I did say be carefull with the screwdriver trick, I may have been lucky up to press but I have done this several times without damage, or maybe luck does not come into it.!!!
