Could anyone advise? My Samsung SRL36 ‘no frost’ (cool n’cool) upright fridge-freezer is three years old and is working ok (though the fridge is not quite as cool as might be expected on the coolest setting).

However, it’s recently started making an intermittent farting sound, perhaps once every few minutes. Is this an indication of a potential upcoming problem?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Bob

It’s not a good idea to run any frost free fridge freezers at their coolest setting constantly because there is a tendency for their evaporators to clogg up with ice, restricing the air flow through it.

If you can think of the evaporator (which is hidden in the back of your appliance) as a little bit like the radiator of a car but only working in reverse, in so much that it throws off cool air instead of warm.

If you were to restrict the air flow to the radiator in your car it would not work efficiently.

If you constantly run your fridge freezer at its maximum setting, then the evaporator gets very heavily frosted which consequently reduces the air flow through it, there by reducing it’s ability to deliver enough chilled air
    throughout your appliance.

The very best advice I could give you is to totally defrost your appliance as soon as you run down your food stocks stored in it. To do this properly will require the appliance to be switched off at the wall for at least 24 hrs with the doors left slightly open. Then set the appliance to a moderate setting and then turn the power back on.

Only use maximum setting or fast freeze very sparingly i.e. for a few hours at a time prior to restocking it or if the doors have been left open for exteded periods. It may also be worth checking if the door seals are making full and complete contact with the cabinet.

The sounds you are hearing could be the defrost elements trying to defrost a very heavily frosted evaporator which could be another indication.

    Hi Del,

Thanks for your information and advice.

Even from new though, the fridge section would only just get sufficiently cool if set to the maximum setting. In retrospect I should have complained to the store while in warranty. However, the freezer section seems fine regardless of this setting, so I’m inclined to think that the fridge temp. problem is merely poor design.

I’ll try your suggestion of total defrost and hope that cures the worrying ‘farting’!

    Thanks for your help.
