ParticipantHi,
I have a Samsung RS21NCMS fridge freezer which started to emit strange noises from inside the fridge. I have read several posts that indicated that it may need a full defrost , which I have done (24 Hrs). Last night I powered the fridge back up and it was much quieter and attained its default temps (-20 & 3).
However after a couple of hours I opened the freezer and it did not feel as if it was that cold. I switched the unit off and then back on and the digital display showed the actual temp (-2 & 7). The fridge then started cooling and attained its temp again. This morning it was still saying -20 and 3 and when i cycled the power the display changed to -11 & 5. The fridge has now once again reached -20 & 3…..Has anyone got any ideas???
Thanks
Simon.

A fault will most probably lie either with the defrost elements, defrost thermostat or thermal fuse.

Well…. Have just had an engineer (expert appliance care) out and fridge has basically been condemned..
Apparently a common fault with these units is that the rear insulation panel gets impregnated with ice. Engineer said that this would need replacement as once this happens once it will keep happening. cost £174.85. He also said that would probably need to replace defrost and temp sensors cost £28.00 each. Then 1 hour labour at £20 per 15 mins Cost £100. He said that this may fix the problem but that the fridge may well need a new defrost heater Cost £80 ish. I think he was telling me the truth as he didn’t really try to push me to have the work done. Having already coughed up £60 for the call I have decided to look at getting a new fridge. BUT NOT A SAMSUNG!!!!!
Can’t afford much, so if anyone has any reccomendations in the cheaper end of the market that would be great.😥 😡

If the noise you had was a grinding noise from the fridge and when the fridge door was opened the noise stopped it will be the Phlenim(rear poly block behind water tank)common fault.Samsung have now upgradded the material.I always change the Phlenim and evaportor sensor.Worth doing and should not cost that much unless there is a heater/sensor or thermal fuse fault. You get a 2 year warrenty with samsung.

Hi,
The noise did stop when the fridge door was opened. When you say “water tanl” what do you mean. This model doesn’t have water/ice dispenser.
Is the “Phlenim” the rear panel on the insidr of the fridge with the fan mounted on the back of it?
Also, do you supply spares for these as I have been unbable to findanyone who can. If you can how much would a Phlenim and evap sensor cost?
Unfortunatly the unit is about 2 1/2 years old and out of warranty.February 1, 2006 at 12:21 pm #160820Weirdjam

yes it is the part the fan is mounted to. If you pull out the bottom 2 drawers you will see the cover (and if close enough 2 screw holes where the water tan k affixs-yours doesnt have the tank as you say but its the same plenheim.) Expert will be best bet for spres with samsung i’m afraid.

Well everyone, just thought I needed to update everyone. Having sent several letters to Samsung regarding the excessive cost of repairs on a fridge that was only 3 months out of warranty, they finally gave in and agreed a free of charge repair….. only after i threatened to go to BBC watchdog program about the problem… so after 4 Expert App visits, 3 sensors, 2 phlenims and a defrost heater and about 5 hours of labour everything is working!!
Also the engineer told me that expert appliance care are closing down in a couple of months… any one know anything about this?March 19, 2006 at 12:57 pm #160822gegsy
