I have a cyclic defrost fridge that has stopped cooling. When switched on the compressor runs for 15-20 seconds then stops. After a further 10-15 seconds you can here a click.

Is this a compressor failure? Are there any other possible causes?

    Thanks for any responses.

    Re: Query Compressor Failure

hi mat, this sounds very much like compressor failure, yes.
the clicking you can hear is the thermal overload cut out cutting out.
the cut out operates if the compressor draws too much current or gets too hot.

this is almost always a direct indication that the compressor has failed.

    thanks alf

Is there an easy way to confirm this with a multimeter?

    Re: Query Compressor Failure

if you’re metering the compressor, you’ll get 3 possible readings between the 3 pins.
the lowest reading would be that of the run windings, the middle one is the reading of the start windings and the highest is the sum of the first two.

this may not tell you too much as the compressor could be physically jammed.

in terms of probability, this fault is more than likely the compressor, trying another toc would verify this.

very very occasionally, it may be the toc which is faulty.
