ParticipantI keep reading on the forum that some guys are doing 10 t 12 calls a day, one or two questions come to mind, what faults are you missing when repairing an appliance? are you doing electrical safety tests? also what milage per call?

Perhaps you should enquire about hours first. I regularly do 10 calls each day, but start before 7.30 every morning, even so I am a late starter compared to R600a ๐

hi iadom
yep I have a 1/3 of my day done by then.but there again my area is a bit of a hate for a lot of engineers within the M25,but I miss all the traffic and can park without any probs and majority of customers are pleased with a call at between 5.30 & 6.00am.
as for recalls or first time fix then very low recall @4{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} 1st fix 91{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} but there again my hours last weeks was 80hrs.

Not quite as bad as M25 round here Bryan, but the traffic can be a real pain around this area, one of the reasons I start early. The only real problems I have with that is finding a parking space in this 2/3 car family age, with one car on the drive, one on the pavement etc, and seeing the numbers on the door in the dark. I sometimes feel like a burglar, sneaking down the path with my torch to make sure I am at the correct address, at least on those that bother to have a number on the door. ๐ฅ ๐

Hi Deltra
I am also “up here” my mileage per call is an approx 12, donโt you just love the rural areas. I used to work for Hotpoint and they expected you to complete 9 calls per day, if you missed any thing when you did a repair they wanted you to do the recall in your own time. It was a bit of a bug*er as some of the lads were having to go back to two or three call-backs some days, consequently these guys were working excessive hours. So it payed to do a thorough job first time round, this is why I raised this thread. We all know its sods law when you rush a job you make mistakes, in our line of business they can be fatal. So I wonder if a 10 or 12 call rate might be a tad too much. The two previous replies point out the hours they are working, personally I would be knackered if I worked those hours and I am sure my ability would be impaired, but thatโs me, I am getting a bit long in the tooth!!!January 17, 2006 at 10:18 am #161064iadom

I am a spritely 58 year old ๐ , If I was to drive from one end of the main area I do to the other it would be around 25 miles, average distance between calls, ( due to using ‘ The Knowledge) ๐ is around 3 to 4 miles.

IMO Mal, lots of people lead stressful lives and drive when they’re tired which probably causes far more death and injury than a repairman making the occasional error which he might have made anyway, even after plenty of rest. I don’t think our profession is that much more dangerous than say a shop assistant driving home tired. How many people are killed or injured by appliance faults in a year? And how many of those are due to negligence of repairers? Compare with road deaths/injuries.

Fair point Mike, all I am saying is that I have seen first hand guys getting fatigued, as in my Hotpoint days when call backs were in your own time, on top of your daily workload. This only compounded the error level. It fair to point out most of this stress was instigated by poor management. Self-employed engineers do what has to be done, it is their business after all, and so I have no qualms about working all hours.
I tip my hat to you Iadom, must be all that squash that keeps you sprightly. I would love to do 3-4 miles per call, but in a rural area itโs not possible although I did managed three calls today only a few hundred yards apart!!January 17, 2006 at 7:02 pm #161067leavemetogetonwithit

I wonder how many of us are working in “territories” overlapping each other possibly by scores of miles. If we could all get together and agree we could shrink territory size and still all have enough work. Maybe when 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of work comes via “repairs @” this will be possible. (“You may say I’m a dreamer…”).

A great idea, although it would be a hell of an overlap for you and I!

KeymasterNo Mike, it makes an awful lot of sense actually and something that some of us are very passionate about. Grabbing everything isn’t always the best idea.

I left Hotpoint almost 27 years ago, another Hotpoint engineer left 18 months to 2 years later. He lives in the Dukinfield area and for a while I was travelling to calls towards Stockport and he was passing me going to calls the other side of Rochdale. for many years now we have passed these calls to each other, also if either of us is on holiday we attempt to provide a bit of ad hoc cover.
