if its the original hard plastic sump assembly, change it for the later type, 1604035, comes with a pressure stat too. Other than that a stalling pump?

Yes, I would just fit a new pump, they are not expensive.

Pumps can go intermittent. Usually it’s due to wear in the impellor end bearing or lots of crud getting inside the barrel. Sometimes though a magnet type pump can get a bit warm (maybe due to blockage or poor water flow due poor installation). The plastic barrel can melt slightly making the rotor foul on it intermittently. With the price of a pump being about £3/£5, I agree with Phidom, it’s worth replacing it when there’s doubt as in this case.

PS: If you want to be sure you’ve got the right diagnosis you could run the old pump on a flying lead stopping and starting it a dozen times allowing it a few seconds to fully stop each time. If it stalls just once out of twelve it’s likely a dud. When you’ve got the old pump out, check bearing wear and pull out the rotor to check the barrel condition. This takes very little time, much less than driving 3 miles back to a re-call
