ParticipantOur 4 / 5 year old machine has worked well with no problem until yesterday. During high spin cycle, a loud clattering noise occurred, power was quickly switched off. On inspection, the drum rotates freely with no signs of bearing failure. With top and lower rear access panels removed, no obvious signs of support failure and the whole assembly feels supported ( springy ) when pushed down by hand.
I suspect that one of the suspension body struts may have suffered internal failure although I cannot be sure. Spin cycle seems OK at lower speeds ( loaded).
Any further trouble shooting advice or suggestions would be most appreciated.Date code in the door cut out is 75 120092 which I believe indcates age ?

It could be a foreign body in the tub, but more likely, it’s a broken leg on your drum support! 🙁
iadom wrote:To give you some idea of the damage you are doing to your machine by only doing low temperature washes, this is a drum support I have recently removed from a 3 year old Hotpoint machine, this customer used liquids and only washed at low temperatures. No prizes for guessing the before and after. 😉
With correct dosage, a good quality detergent, regular hot washes, ( try washing a load of whites or something similar once a week on a 60° wash), together with the maintenance wash already suggested, I have seen 15 year old drum supports look almost as clean as the one on the left.

The picture above shows two drum supports, and the damage caused by soap 😕 I’m thinking, 1 of your legs might have broken, causing a loud clangig noise, when the machine is on a fast spin, with some weight inside.

ParticipantThanks Goatboy, Are you suggesting that one leg of the support may be broken,as I have tried moving the drum side to side by hand through a complete rotation but it all seems pretty secure. The machine also works fine on high spin unloaded. Are there any other checks you know of to isolate the cause?

It’s more of a forwards and backward movement you want to try.
If you look at the back of the inner drum, through the door, you can see the indentiation of the dum support.
Pull on the front lip of the drum, where the legs line up.
A broken drum will sound sweet as a nut, when spinning at high speed, when it is empty. It’s the weight of the clothes that will make it noisy.

ParticipantMany thanks once again.
Pulling on the drum lip at each leg in turn produces a knocking at one location which seems to confirm your origonal diagnosis. I will sound really expert when the repaiman calls later today. Thanks again

The drum support in the picture above is from a Hotpoint WMA range, your WM model has a smaller drum support and is even more susceptible to damage caused by constant low temperatures, incorrect dosage and failure to use a good quality detergent.

ParticipantEngineer called and was most impressed by my knowledge ! He just happened to have a spare unit with him and the job is done and dusted. FYI, 2 of the legs were broken completely through and it was all gunged up.
Thanks.
