ParticipantHello
I have recently purchased a new Bosch slimline dishwasher which is happily working and cleaning very well. My question is regarding water hardness/softness. According to the instructions that came with it, and the information from my local Water supplier, water here is quite soft, and both him and the instructions indicate that I don’t need to put any salt (yes the special/not household stuff) in.
Please can someone clarify whether I am doing the right thing, or should I put some in anyway ?
Also, my dishes and glassware are coming out nice and clean, with no wash marks etc, so I’m not using a rinse agent either. Again, am I doing the right thing ?
Presently, I am using dishwasher powder (into the compartment where it goes), not cubes, blocks etc. (although it did come with a box of “Finish”).
Perhaps someone can advise best practice to me regarding my questions, so that I don’t damage anything.
Thanks

You are doing everything correctly. Salt will not be required, rinse aid will only be required if your glasses dry with spots or smears on. And powder is the correct detergent to use (cheaper than tablets anyway).
Carry on, all should be fine 😀

Martin,
I think you are wrong on the need for salt. The salt in the tablets does nothing to do with the internal workings of the machine. By putting salt in the salt container you are flushing a chemical that picks up ANY calcium that could be in the water. By not using salt this way could after a time cause the dishwasher not to work efficiently.

Hold on one minute Bill, the machine in question is in a soft water area, the local advice was that no salt was required, I merely confirmed that for stro1971 it was not necessary to add salt.

Hi
If the water is soft (i.e. does not contain calcium particles), the detergent will work more effectively and there will be less streaking on dishes. Hard water can also block the washer jets with lime scale and cause deposits on heating elements, which will reduce the cleaning efficiency, increase electricity costs and shorten the life of the machine. All dishwasher manufacturers and detergent suppliers want you to get the best results from the machine – and soft water is one of the most important factors in achieving this. The way to ensure water remains soft is to regularly top up the reservoir with granular salt.
Three in one salt tablets do not activate the water softener. For optimum results, the reservoir should be topped up with granular salt. Three-in-one and ‘salt action’ tablets do not top up the reservoir and should be used in conjunction with granular salt for optimum results.Hope that helps

I have many customers with dishwashers over 20 years old that have never had salt added, and have had little or no problems, local water is ultra soft. 🙂
