Hi and thanks for an informative site, i have found info on this site that i couldnt find in an hour or so of serching the net.

anyways, i had a flood in my bathroom witch coused a fair amount of damage to my kitchen, witch i was insured for with a new-for-old policy (witch i have paid for 14 years with out a claim) anyway after much poncing around from my insurence company trying to make it a hard and slow process for claiming (not like they say in there adverts!) they have agreed to replace my washing machine, the model i had was a zanussi fl 828 serial number 1 22 01566, i bought this about 5-7 years ago and have never had a trouble with it, but after the flood the light turn on with the power but nothink happens at all when i try to use it,

the insurence have agreed to replace it with a zanussi zwf 1021w or give me vouchers to the worth of £250 as this is what that model costs from argos, but when i bought the machine it was not the bottom of the range zanussi, i cant remmember what i paid for it but it was about a mid range zanussi, but the model they want to replace it with is a bottom of the range zanussi, i have obviously had my money worth out of my old machine so cant complain with getting a new machine for an old one but since my insurence have been so hostile to my after years of paying there fees for new for old i dont want to let them off by short changings me, so sorry if i dragged this out but basicaly i want to know if anyof u with more experince than me think the zanussi zwf 1021w is a worthy replacement for a zanussi fl828 or should i ask for a better more expensive model ?? many thanks paul

    Hi Paul,
Get a cheque out of them for the £250, find another £50-£80 and buy a Bosch. Far better bet. The model you have described is adequate, the 1000 spin is a step up from your old 800, but you can do much better for a small additional sum.

The AEG is a Zanussi 😉

All owned by Electrolux and essentially the same product.

They’re OK, mid range, I would go with Penguin’s suggestion to be honest 😉

I think you are being a generous fella. New-for-old policy and no claims in 14 years and now you have to put up with being messed about!

My suggestion would be to indicate to your insurance company that you have taken advice from Citizens Advice Bureau and require the following:

    1. A mid-range machine to replace the old one
    2. The cost incurred in the purchase of same
    3. The cost of removing the old machine
    4. The cost of installing the new machine

I suspect someone on this list would be willing to provide an estimate for you and that sounds like a bit more than £250.

    Your call.

    Ian.

To be fair to the Insurers, they are being pretty generous if the offered payout is purely with regard to the washer. Like a car, in their eyes the appliance depreciates year on year, and certainly by 7 years will have no retained value. Fair play, £250’s not bad. Vouchers are bad – they will tie you to a retailer you may not wish to deal with, and are certainly bought at a significant discount by the company!

Get a cheque, have a look around – don’t be fooled by spin speed, once you’re over 1200 rpm, you’re gaining nothing except the earlier demise of your machine.

Or, do as Ian did and buy a Miele – significant investment, but, his kids will inherit it.

Hope that makes things a little clearer, good luck.

Bearing in mind that the fl828 was the most basic model in the range at the time and the equivalent 800 spin version nowadays is well under 200 quid plus going by that serial number your machine is over 14 years old – £250 from your insurer is a pretty good offer. the Zanussi you’ve mentioned will be better spec’d than your current model but I agree that the Bosch will be better.

However… was your machine directly damaged by your flooded bathroom, could this be a coincidence and just a dud door lock?

    Just a thought.

Accepting the insurance companies offer of a replacement machine surely will include removal of the old machine and installing the new?

Accepting a £250 cash settlement will at least give you the option of getting a better machine but all the fag of disposal and re-installation etc.
