KeymasterThis idea was a topper but I never quite got around to doing much about it and, it harks back to the early days of the site. Undettered it’s been rattling around in my head for some time trying to work out the easiest way to do it and, frankly, there isn’t one.
What we’d discussed was a little article called The Engineer’s Opinion. The idea was to collate what you guys thought about different brands and to offer a definitive analysis of those opinions. So what I’ve done is designed a little spreadsheet, it’s dead simple and will take most of us about ten minutes to fill in which should offer a rough guide to what we think of the major brands out there. It’s not perfect and it’s not as much info as I would perhaps like, but it is dead easy to do.
So here’s the deal, I need an absolute minimum of fifty responses to this to make it of any value, but the more I get the more accurate it becomes and the more impact that it could have. When I have the responses I’ll collate the data and statistically analyse the results assuming I have enough. I will then publish the results.
Apart from anything else it may save answering the same old questions about some brand names over and over.
You can get the Excel file by using this link
Please, when you open it, save it as your name as anyone can take part here that fixes appliances and that saves confusion when I get it back. Just send it back to my mailbox, kwatt@ukwhitegoods.co.uk as they will all be treated as confidential although if you comment I may reprint them if they’re good. 😉
Most of all, have a bit of fun doing it and bear in mind that you could regard this as payback time! 😈

Can I suggest a ‘don’t know’ option or ‘leave blank’ if it’s a product that we don’t work on. Otherwise you are going to get a lot of guesswork.

KeymasterYeah Bob, just leave it blank, sorry I forgot that as an option.

So just you are reading them Kenny?
I’d hate for someone of a weaker disposition to read what I wrote about Indesit.
You know all my opinions are kinda of…

Yep, just me that’ll see those.
What it would do is give a generalised opinion on the various brands which could be used to answer a lot of the “what’s XXXX brand like” that we keep getting. Of course I’d never use a poor score on, say, spares pricing to highlight a high cost of ownership or suchlike. 😉

Loads of “Internet Nerds” (pardon the expression lurker please for a moment :rotfl: ) will continue to ask that very question. The site will continue to give it’s unbiased opinion, I’m sure of that. 😀
The trick is that we (repairers) must then take on board the conclusions of the survey and gear ourselves to fixing those that we do NOT recommend.
Seems like a winner to me 😉

Ken , do you want us to fill the form with regard to the manufacturers current models and value. I`m thinking of Hotpoint,Hoover etc. where if you`re speaking value over the last 20 years then it might be an 8 but if you`re looking at the latest models then 3 or 4 may be more appropriate IMO.

KeymasterI’m looking for the situation as you see it now as that will give a fair indication of what to expect for the next year or so. Where I can I will balancethat with current models, where it’s a manufacturers agent or employed engineer as obviously they will often rate higher onproducts that they are familiar with.
Stats, gotta love ’em. 😉
