I use a PDA to track all my jobs and spares, I had to set up the datadbases myself which was not difficult and the software cost me about £30.00 (Comercial pakages can cost £100’s)
A few taps on the screen brings up the customer details and previous calls to them . (provided I have been to them before)
The spares database tells me the retail price, if I have it in stock and who the cheapest supplier is.
All this information and lots more is synchronised with my PC at home every evening, so the info is there as well for safety. A tool I would not be without.
Total cost including software £250Toni

That’s what I was looking at but I wasn’t sure how the PDA would cope with
a large database, how many records does your spares database have?Is the package you are using SprintDB pro by any chance?

Currently 1978 parts records & 3416 Customer records with plenty of room left. You can store these on a CS Card with almost a limitless amount of memory for this sort of thing. Looking things up is very quick, almost instant
I have also created databases for fault codes & a model reference database for quickly finding out which parts fit which machines
The software is HandBase for Palm OS. They also do a version for Windows mobile
My PDA is a Palm T3 which is now a bit dated ( 2 Years old). but the new PDA’s from most manufacturers are very good & have larger storage capacity, One even has 4 gb hard driveMarch 1, 2006 at 7:20 pm #166886walnut

Sounds wicked, do you have a seperate database for your jobs or are the details stored under customers details database.
I use the PDA for Tomtom and put customers details and jobs into my Contacts with defferent catagories for complete or active jobs.
There is a plug in for contacts that opens up tomtom and navigates to the address, If you could do this with a database of jobs, that would be cool.March 1, 2006 at 7:57 pm #166887Ultrazapp

The ACH (Advanced Call Handling) software announced at the UKW conference last Friday looks very interesting it might just be worth hanging on until June to see what the lads have on offer.
Judging from my previous experience’s with the management of UKW if they have gone to the trouble of designing a software package for service engineers it will be worth the wait.
“Bespoke” software just for our industry count us we will buy it.
:lesson: 😆

Hi Walnut
sorry for the delay in replying
I use jurt one database for customers and records, just a tick in a box sorts out the days jobs (Sorted by time, postcode and town)
This is just one I made up from the software programe for my own use, it is not a comercial programe. I am only a one man band so it does me fine for now

I am looking forward to the ACH software, I cant make the meetings so I have no I dea what it is like, but I am sure it will be just what most of us need and I will certainly be interested in buying it, if it is suitableToni

Got the database up and running but it would be good if I could just type in the postcode and the software pull up the coresponding address.
Has anybody had any experience of programming this?March 5, 2006 at 8:22 pm #166891kwatt
KeymasterYou need a bit of software from the Post Office to do that I’m afraid and it ain’t cheap. Then you have to integrate the database query to do a lookup on the PO data to populate the fields.
Sounds simple, but of course it’s not that easy to do. 😕

hi walnut
I use postcode anywhere http://www.postcodeanywhere.co.uk/
It’s £160 a year for the web based system but its worth it to confirm the address’s and its upsated with the new builds quite regulary.

I was asked to write a program for Crwys Electrics Ltd the requirements were
1. Upto six engineers
2. Eight calls a day
3 Search data base with house number, name (part name), street (part name), phone number, or post code
4 will print off work at the end of the dayIt has been working for 12 months now and has 13,000 entries in it
I am now doing an upgrade to it as he now wants to put job returns in itI use mysql data base as it is free search time is less than one second
I wrote it in visual basic.net
If any one is in Cardiff and knows Paul ask him if you can see it as it saves him more than one hour a day.
