    Hi there.
My father-in-law has a Hotpoint RF20A fridge freezer that stopped working (the compressor isn’t running). He has tested the compressor by powering it directly, and the fridge and freezer get cold. He assumes this proves that the compressor and thermostat are working OK. He thinks the problem is the block on top of the compressor, which he believes to be a solid state relay. The numbers on it are: MM8711BX205 and it has 3 connectors marked C, M & S. He is now stumped, as he doesn’t have a schematic. I can’t find any information about the fridge or the relay on the internet nor can I find a schematic anywhere (I don’t mind buying one). Can anyone out there please help me?

    Thanks in advance.

It will almost certainly be the thermostat that has failed, it needs to be checked for continuity (with the power off).

No schematic will be available I’m afraid from Hotpoint.

Quite how he managed to get the compressor to run correctly by bypassing the start device is a bit of a mystery and a dangerous one at that. It was probably running on it’s start winding which may well have rendered it useless if left for any length of time. Live testing of this type cannot be condoned for obvious reasons :zap:
