ParticipantI have a Panasonic combi micro/oven/grill, 1000 watts, (don’t have the actual model number with me, but it’s got ‘Inverter’ on the front), and it’s 4 years old. Yesterday, while using it on the microwave setting, it started giving off a plastic-y burning smell and nothing was getting hot. I’ve been told it’s almost certainly the magnitron (?) gone.
Could anyone please tell me what sort of price I would be looking at, parts and labour, to have this put right. Thanks.

Without the model number it’s hard to be accurate but £100 as a ball park figure. There is also an issue with certain models where the PCB needs replacing.
If you take it to your local repairer they should be able to give a more accurate estimate.

Thanks Dave. I know now roughly what to expect. I’m quite happy with the machine otherwise, so I’ll take it in on Saturday. Fingers crossed that my PCB (whatever that is 😯 ) is OK.
Thanks again.

Under NO circumstances be tempted to open up and have a look. They can hold a charge of up to 6,000 volts, even if unplugged from the mains, and you won’t survive that size of a shock.
Therefore take it to an authorised M/Wave repairer. The Panasonic invertor type is a good machine, and might be worth spending some money.
Take a look inside the cooking area, and see if there is any burns or burnt fat deposits on the inner roof. There should be a sheet of mica in the roof, (looks like beige or grey plastic 4″ x 3″ approx), and they can breakdown and burn as well as spark and arc across. If that is the case, won’t cost an arm or a leg. But even then, not a DIY job.

Thank you Alex. The other half will normally have a go at most things, but he knows his limitations and wouldn’t touch something like this!
I’ve found a repairer in the Yellow Pages who’s not too far from me. (A member of NAME, so hopefully OK.) From my description to him of the problem, he reckons £80 parts and labour, so I’ll take it in at the weekend.
Thanks for all the advice 😀

All part of the service, do tell this repairer about us though, he may not be one of our numbers.
