    Model: Siemens Extraklasse XLS140 (E Nr: WXLS140GB /01)

Age: Three and a half years (Six months out of warranty … !!)

    Problem:

While washing some heavy towels today the machine started making nasty grinding / rubbing noises which I initially thought sounded very serious – bearings or something similar.

After removing the towels and turning the inner drum by hand, the noise was still evident. I then pulled back the grey rubber door seal or “boot gasket” as Siemens call it on their spares website since it seemed to be rubbing against the inner drum at the bottom as you look at it. When I turned the drum again, the rubbing noise had stopped and the drum turned as freely as I would expect it to.

It appears that the door seal has become streched in some way and is now rubbing on the drum at that point. Simple fiddling and encouragement of it to return to a non-touching state does not appear to work so I presume I need to fit a new one. There are no leaks from the door seal at the moment.

    My queries are:

    1. Will using the machine once or twice before replacing the door seal cause more serious damage with bearings, belts and motors ?

    2. How easy is it to replace the seal myself ? I am a reasonably competent DIY-er, but have seen one or two posts here and elsewhere which indicate that it can be a tricky job to do

    3. If I should attempt it myself, is it a major piece of work involving taking the top / sides off the machine or indeed trying to work from underneath ?
Can someone give a short set of steps to follow to remove the old seal and install the new one ?

    4. What is the likely cost to have an engineer come and fix it ? The door seal is quoted at £22.79 on Siemens website

Many thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give.

    🙂

    Hi aharries
Front of appliance will come off to reveal door seal. P/no 361127 £19.40+Vat
Not a bad job, as with most bosch and siemens.
I would not recommend using appliance until fault rectified IMO.

    Greg

Thanks for your quick reply and advice.

Could you give me a bit more advice re getting the front panel off ?

There appear to be a few “torx” type screws to the sides of the control panel and behind the detergent drawer, plus a couple around the filter and emergency drain point. There are also two holding the door in place and two around the lock catch point (presumably holding the safety catch on the rear of the front panel)

I am not sure if removing any or all of these will release the front panel. I presume that I need to remove the spring loaded retaining ring that is holding the door seal tight to the outside of the front panel first, but am unsure about how to release the front panel itself after that. Do I need to take the back off at all to release internal catches or screws on the rear of the front panel ? If I bodge it and damage the machine even cosmetically, the wife will want a new one anyway !

Any light you can shed would be great …

    thanks

Sorry, but can’t give step by step instructions I’m affraid.

If you’re unsure, and don’t want to annoy the missus 😆 it’s probably best to call an engineer.

Re: Siemens Extraklasse XLS140 Door Seal / Boot Gasket Query

Thanks for your reply. I am grateful for all the support that this forum can give.

Can you explain why you cannot give me the starting point(s) for removing the front panel ? I cannot see that it is a technical secret that should not be divulged in public forums. By trial and error I am sure that I will be able to work it out and do it without resorting to force to lever off the panel, but I thought it might be easier to consult the experts in this forum.

This is why the forum exists, is it not ?

Please could you or someone else help me with this ?

    Many thanks in advance.

Re: Siemens Extraklasse XLS140 Door Seal / Boot Gasket Query

After the under-whelming show of support from the experts, I have had a go at removing the front panel myself, and it is extremely easy.

For future reference of the users looking for advice the steps that I followed are:

    1. Unplug the appliance & turn off the water
    2. The whole glass door assembly on the front panel can be removed by taking out the two torx screws on the hinge and sliding it upwards to release the lugs holding it to the front panel. This is not actually necessary as the panel will still come off with the door in place, but it does make it lighter if you remove the door.
    3. Remove detergent dispenser drawer and remove one easy to access torx screw (ignoring the two much deeper seated torx screws)
    4. Remove filter cover at right hand side of bottom kickplate and remove one torx screw
    5. Slide kickplate to the right and remove
6.. Remove two torx screws at base of front panel revealed by removing kickplate
    7. Remove outer wire holding door seal / boot gasket to the outside of front panel (pulls off fairly easily and is spring tensioned at left hand side)
    8. Pull front panel out gently at the bottom, allowing it to slip down at the top whereupon it comes free
    9. Be aware that there are wires to the electric door lock on the right hand side of the rear of the front panel – the panel can swing to the right and sit on the floor while still connected or you can disconnect the wires.
    10. You should now be able to disconnect a small hose running down into the top of the door seal which is held by a spring clip
    11. The door seal can then be removed from the outer drum by pulling off the large circular retaining spring.

I have ordered the new seal from Siemens for a cost of c.£27 which should arrive by post tomorrow, and then it should be easy enough to fit and reverse the above steps.

I hope this is helpful to other users out there, but as the experts say – if you are not sure, then it might be wise to call an engineer instead.

    Regards

An expert wouldn’t take the front panel off to change the door seal! It is unsafe to give non-experts step-by-step instructions on repairs. The next person that reads this might electricute himself, chop his hand off, who knows.

If you were paying for a service, you’d have scope for complaint. But I can’t believe that people complain about a free, voluntary service 🙄

ps. Gald to hear you got sorted

    A quick update …

The new door seal arrived at 7am this morning by post and I fitted it in around 30 minutes from unwrapping it to putting all the various parts back together and starting the first wash off.

Quite an easy job to do. No leaks so far !

    😀
