ParticipantHi there, I am having central heating installed in my house . My plumber has fitted a device on the cold feed to the gas boiler called an “Electrolytic Gold Scale Inhibitor”. He says it is to prevent the formation of limescale in the boiler, and the trade price is about £25. He says it works on magnetism .
If it works, and I am still to be convinced, Why are people buying water softeners, and why are these devices not fitted to washing machines? Do I smell witchcraft or flim-flam? Does it work on the same principal as the magtnetic bracelets that “cure” Rheumatism? Has anyone had personal practical experience of this device , or is it a ripoff? Any comments? Shoul i perhaps have posted this on the Allied Trades Forum?March 11, 2006 at 8:26 pm #169155kwatt
KeymasterI have been told that the effect of magnetic softeners is not so great, the jury’s out in other words.

It keeps the scale in hard form like sand and helps prevent it sticking to the hot surface. I put one around the cold pipe and you can see the difference in the kettle. It does work strangely enough!

Seem to remember these being fitted to dishwashers years ago, possibly AEG. Don’t think they worked very well.

Hi,
I used to go to a lady whose company made them but she never confirmed that they actually worked. All she would say was they provided a good income for her so I was far from convinced but would like to try one and at £25 it would seem there is nothing to lose. The cheapest I have seen is around £70

HI 🙂
I gave my brother 2 magnets out of a old magnetron and he has put them on top of the hose that circulates the water in his fish pond to stop the water from going green and it seems to workmark

Sorry but I am still to be convinced. Incidentally ,I remember reading somewhere that in these kind of applications , the magnets have to fitted on either side of the water flow such that each magnet has its south pole facing inwards, that is , south poles opposing. This is not the natural or obvious way, as the result will be repulsion , necessitating, a bracket to hold the magnet. Further comments welcome.
