It seems that available climate class ratings only specify ambient temperatures of +10 Centigrade and above.

I’m looking for a chest freezer to put in a garage (occasionally goes below freezing. When I ask whether OK to put in garage the manufacturers just point me to the climate class.

Can anybody tell me whether there is any reason why a Freezer (not fridge freezer) would fail to operate correctly at temperatures of zero degrees or less?

    The lebherr website says:
“When the temperature falls below the lower limit of the climate class, refrigerators with or without freezer compartment and fridge-freezers will no longer operate properly. However, freezers will still function technically. Should the ambient temperature fall below freezing point, LIEBHERR can no longer guarantee the proper functioning of the electronic components. Also condensation can form on certain places (like the electronics).”

This is the most optimistic thing I’ve seen from a freezer manufacturer! Are Libherr products different in some way? Also, I’m told they make Miele freezers so would same apply to those?

Even Liebherr point me to the Climate class when I ask them the question on the phone. Can anybody clarify what will work (as opposed to what the manufacturers will guarantee).

    Thanks.

    Re: Climate Class and Freezers

Thanks – very interesting. Can somebody comment on the links below which seem to contradict some of this. Again, this is from the Liebherr site:

This ‘cool facts’ section shows a liebherr freezer working at -9 centigrade:
    http://en.liebherrinfo.nl/cool_facts.php?page=06

Can freezer chests be placed in a cellar or garage?:
    http://en.liebherrinfo.nl/faq.php?question=3

Which says”In principle cellars, garages or sheds are quite favourable locations to place a freezer. LIEBHERR freezers are provided with a foamed-in condenser that warms the outside walls of the freezer with warmth from the freezer. This prevents condensation on the walls of the freezer. If damp rises from the floor on which the freezer is placed, condensation may form on the underside of the freezer. That is why it is advisable to place the freezer on a wooden platform so the chest is ventilated underneath and the feet do not get wet.”

I have a 20 year old freezer in the garage which I want toi replace. I’m not currently experiencing condesnsation problems.

Is condensation THE main problem? Would that be more of an issue when it gets very hot (ambient) as opposed to very cold?

If the freezer generally functions correctly but is susceptible to condensation in extreme conditions then I may just take the risk. What do you make of the wooden platform stuff??

    Thanks.

    Re: Climate Class and Freezers

Venting it may solve some problems I guess, not seen it done so I can’t comment. I can only comment on what I’ve seen and I’ve seen examples where the likes of a Brandt chest freezer was in a cold extension with condensation streaming down the sides, which was the complaint.

Now that may not happen on a Liebherr, I don’t know as I’ve not seen one tested or used under those conditions but they do appear to making a play for that angle given the opening comments. From those I would take it (knowing how they usually go) that they are saying it is a favourable place to locate such a machine due to the nature of it and that most people would put it in that type of location out the way, not that it is always suitable or preferable for the appliance as it doesn’t seem to say that IMO.

But if they say it will work it most likely will as Liebherr, from what I’ve seen of them, are pretty decent products. It’s also nice to see one that will (or should) work okay under those conditions.

    Re: Climate Class and Freezers

sometimes, the anti condensation line, the foamed in condenser that you refer to, can work in the opposite way if the freezer is in a cold location.

this anti condensation line warms the body of the fridge up to prevent condensation occurring when the unit is placed in an ambient within the parameters of it’s particular climate class.

if the ambient is cold then the cold air meets with the warm spot on the cabinet and condensation results.

this condensation wouldn’t be the one that liebherr refer to and if you were to buy a unit that wasn’t electronically controlled, i couldn’t see a problem in siting it in a garage.

placing a chest freezer on a pallet or wooden block would be a good idea.

    Re: Climate Class and Freezers

Part of the problem I have is that their website says one thing – but if you phone them they say they don’t recommend putting in garage! That’s why it’s useful to get your real-world experience of these things.

Has the basic technology changed over the years? If my 20 year old freezer works OK in the garage then have I got a reaonable chance that a new one will work? Not worried about guarantees – just what is likely to work!

(Incidentally, a Miele model I saw the manual for said it was OK down to 5 centigrade, even though the climate class =SN).

    Hi

I have a leibherr chest freezer in my store room that regulary goes below -5 on I dont have any operational problems.

no condensation either.also bear in mind the Miele one is most likely made by Liebherr as Leibherr make Meile’s refrigeration.

    Re: Climate Class and Freezers

Thanks – that’s encouraging. But as I’m a bit of a cheapskate I was hoping to buy a Miele model that seems identical to the Liebherr but £100 cheaper!

Do you know if they are made to the same spec? Apparently they are made by same company (Liebherr).

    Cheers.

    hi

they will all come off the same production line and at the end they would then change the box of badges they use.

We have been using a Whirlpool chest freezer in the garage for the last six years now and I must say we hav`nt had any condensation so far even in the coldest of weather, very impressed 😉
