ParticipantGreat site guys……
I have a hotpoint dryer as above which I bought from Currys on 22nd January 2006…
Yesterday after filling with laundry as usual, went to do some housework, after a few minutes thought thats quiet, then smelled burning, quickly ran to the kitchen to find the dryer with smoke billowing from door, and a strong smell of burning, using a cloth to pull the dryer out (extremely hot casing)switched off and unplugged…..
After contacting Hotpoint they are insisting an engineer inspects the dryer and carries out repairs, and are saying they will refuse to replace the product anyway, no matter what and we have to accept this!! No way!!
Some of the questions I have been asked by Currys and Hotpoint are Did I spin the washing first!! Did I put dry clothing into the tumble dryer?Get my Drift – it is laughable, if it wasn’t so scary, I was only in the next room, what if I hadn’t smelt or noticed anything odd noise wise..
Can anyone tell me if I have to accept a repair on this dryer, as it is only 7 weeks old, and used 3 times!!

That is the case I’m afraid, the course of action is repair/replace/refund (trading standards use the same formula).
It may just be something quite straightforward that has caused this to occur even though it seems quite severe at the time. Of course, if it has been an extreme failure the engineer may not be able to repair it anyway so a replacement would be the only option 😉
The questions asked by Hotpoint and Currys are to try and ascertain whether the “smoke” was actually steam.
Please let us know what the engineer finds after the visit 🙂

Re: above dryer…….
The timer has to be re-placed, hopefully this coming Friday……. (11 days after incident)….
What hope for the future of this dryer, after only 3 uses?

Oh dear 🙁
Another Merloni horror story. Notice how most of the engineers here don’t care, because they’re (unfortunatly) used to hearing customer constantly complaining about Merloni’s cheap problematic products, and their near-useless customer service.
Now they own Hotpoint, the problem will just get worse 😥
Note how most of these are Merloni products!
“Oh Jeff, buy that Hotpoint, that’s a good make…”
My only advice is, don’t buy a Merloni*, but that’s a little too late now 🙁

Its going in the bin, cann’t stand it glaring at me from the corner of my kitchen…. still leaking over the floor albeit not as much as it was… ever tried cleaning the filter thats a joke after removing the screws place one foot on the bottom and pull, otherwise in a month of Sundays you’ll never budge it……….
I so not know whether to 😆 or 🙁 👿

i once went out to a hoover tc dryer that had been on fire
turned out that the hoteliers staff had taken soaking towels out of the none spinning broken washer and put straight in to dry
my theory is that the weight of the water was enough to stop machine turning while the cold water prevented the themostats cutting off allowing the top towels to bake dry before finally igniting
the things people do when its not there machine
incidently same hotel i have taken out of there washer
darts
3 rubber gloves
a spoon
half a biro
some clingfilm
rawl plugs
countless coins
some screws
but at my call out + vat every time thats fine with me 😀 -
