ParticipantHelp please…… we are a very small domestic appliance service company who predominantly repair microwaves and other appliances. We have been awarded a service contract to repair a certain make of refrigeration and therein lies the problem in that the manufacturer expects us to dispose of their fridge and freezer doors for their under guarantee work. They won’t collect from us after the repair and we can’t leave it at the customers for disposal.
To take the doors down to the local dump in a trade van is not allowed and I can’t fit the very large ones in my own car.
We don’t have enough doors to start up a trade waste contract with the council and therefore we are stuck.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Lawrence.
Do you use this letter for under guarantee repairs. These fussy London customers expect us to remove it and complain to the manufacturer otherwise. Hopefully you can find a copy of the letter for me.
Thanks.

Hi Linda
If the company states that they will not collect the old doors then the old doors are left with the customer according to all the refrigerant companies that I deal with.
If they require you to remove them then you charge for the disposal of the doors,IE £8 per door.my local tip charges £5 per door then i add £3 for extra time and fuel.If the manufacturers wont pay then advise the customer to contact the manufacturers to arrange collection as you are NOT allowed to take them away as they are classed as waste which you would then need a waste carriers licence for each county you pass through I believe.

We also will not remove waste doors from a customer premises, we advise customer that the doors are theirs and to take disposal up with the manufacturer.

We leave all doors with the customers and refer them back to the call centre if any problems, or a good line for the customer is ” you need to keep the old door for a week as the manufacturer may want to collect it for inspection, if no one makes contact then you can dispose of it ” This works every time and saves a compliant against you 😉

LindaWe repair Leibherr through ISDA, and in ALL cases we leave the door on site. We are not allowed to transport them, let alone dispose of them.
If the customer complains we refer them to the manufacturer, after all it is their responsibility, and all they are doing is putting the onus onto you the repair agent.
Sometimes you have to be firm with either the maker or end user, neither of which would support you in breaking the law, and they shouldn’t expect you to.

Law – what law?
Can anyone kindly give me the link that is being referred to regarding disposing these doors. Something legal would give me bait for my rod in dealing directly with the manufacturer (or perhaps that’s not the right expression but you know what I mean).
Thanks everyone.

These should help:
http://www.wasteworks.org.uk/legislatio … etail4.asp
http://www.fsb.org.uk/data/default.asp?ID=76&loc=policy
The owner of the waste is the person who instigates the service visit so essentially the customer owns the old door but as the fault is down to the manufacturer they should take responsibilty 🙂
