ParticipantI’ve just been asked if it’s OK to wash trainers in a washing machine. My instinct is to say it’s a bad thing to do. I know some blame trainers for busting the lifters and paddles from Indesit’s and Hotpoints etc although the evidence is purely anecdotal as far as I’m concerned.
What are your opinions on the pros and cons of washing trainers in washing machines. It seems crazy to me, but I’m after balanced thoughts.

If you look on the program legend on the machine front which cycle is the trainer cycle ? come to that where in the user manual does it refer to the washing of footware such as trainers?
I have not come across a manual as yet which advises that the washing of trainers is recommended someone else will probably correct me and this is just my opinion.

out of the last five sets of hotpoint wma lifters i’ve fitted, three of them were necessary immediately after washing trainers. i tell customers that if their drum lifters are plastic, don’t do it.
finally i may be imagining it but i think i did once see a manual which recommended a cycle for trainers but i can’t remember which brand.March 27, 2006 at 9:46 pm #171120iadom

Fine in the old style, one sheet of stainless steel drums, but with plastic lifters a definite no no, knocks them of for fun on WMA drums.

There is an Ariston machine (or is it an Indesit?) that has a ‘special shoe’ program. There is a shoe logo on the front of the machine!!!
I think it is one of this year’s production machines. When I saw it a month or so ago I intended to take a photo to post on the site.Bob

No Bob, that logo on the front is the spot you kick when it inevitably goes wrong. 😥 🙂

True! Installed an Indesit WD12X i/w/d on Thursday for a landlord; it has a trainers programme and a nice little shoe symbol on the programme selection panel.

KeymasterShoes in a machine, not a good idea methinks.
Balance instabilty as well as the fact we have no idea what they’re made of or the potential damage to a drum. I’m afraid I always advise “NO!”.
But to move on a bit from a previous post, when was the last time you saw a care label on a pair of Nike’s? 😉

Yes one of my concerns is also the potential damage to the trainers although I suppose that’s their problem. I don’t want to say it’s a no-no just because it’s a new thing and appear out of touch – especially if some manufacturers even have a special wash program for them as implied. Maybe some trainers do have instructions on washing in a washing machine?
As I say, my gut reaction is to say you should never do it, but where do you go for a definititve answer? Other than here??

KeymasterYeah Andy, I’d go with a “no” in all honesty and I’ll explain why I say that.
For a start there’s no guarantee that the trainers will get cleaned properly never mind that they could be damaged and, in your case on Washerhelp (or here), telling someone to do it would be the kiss of death if they then went and ruined little Johnny’s new £80 Nike’s.
You even said it was okay in writing so they could potentially sue you for the damage if Nike said no to machine washing.
It’s unlikely, but it’s all too possible to actually do it.
Then on top of that you get some nutter reading about it a few months later who destroys drum paddles and hold you liable for the damage as you said it was okay to do it.
All in all, a minefield best avoided by simply stating that if the appliance manufacturer says that the machine can do and the shoe manufacturer agrees then fine, other than that I’d say no.

When you put it like that K, it seems much clearer 🙂
I will advise a definite no. I maight solicite “if you know better” responses though.

Wash trainers overnight in a bowl filled with hand hot water and a mild detergent. Rinse well in the morning and then place in a Fisher Paykel Tumble Dryer fitted with optional ‘Trainer Shelf’. 😉 (F & P think of everything don’t they?)

Not a bad bit of advice Martin, I’m sure F&P will be sending the cheque soon. 😉 😆
TBH Andy you know what some net punters are like as well as I do, there’s always one smart-ass in the audience all too willing to heckle for the sake of it. But at least if you cover it with sound advice that applies to most, if not all, instances then there’s not much you can do other than ask them what program that their shoe manufacturer recommends that they use. At that point the silence will be deafening I’m sure.
