ParticipantHello there!
I have had this machine longer than I care to remember, it has seen my two children through from birth up to them both getting married. However in the past week the machine has stopped taking the fabric conditioner on the cotton cycles and also isn’t all that automatic any more as it reaches high speed spin and stays there, it refuses totally to click onto the finish line on it’s own which resulted in 1 or 2 loads having a good 30-45 minute spin.
Tried it on the delicate programmes and it takes the fabric conditioner and stops and starts in all the right places, it’s just the cotton programmes I’m having problems with.
Is it worth trying to get this sorted out or should I bite the bullet and go for a new one which I am sure will not nearly as long as this one has!?

The old girl will have a ‘flat spot’ within the Timer control. Parts are for the most part at least obsolete now so best just to give her a ‘nudge’ to complete that all important cotton’s cycle. 😉

Ok thanks for that. reading that, I thought it was worth perservering with, however another anomaly has come to light just today. I put some things on a synthetic wash which works perfectly fine, it stopped at rinse hold, so i then moved it to spin and this was all performed as normal…everything hunky dory. however after the machine had been finished about 40 minutes i went to go and retrieve my washing and the door was still locked! I left it another hour on top of that and the door still wouldnt open, finally after approx 2 and 3/4 hrs the door opened. The door normally lets you open it within about 3 minutes. I have done another load which finished precisely 56 minutes ago and I am awaiting access to my laundry once again! HELP! I dont really want to send my beloved old machine to the tip if i don’t have to, because apart from the recent sticky spin cycle it washes and rinses beautifully. Also, I am now wondering what spin speed my machine is, after all these years I don’t know where the book is for it! But my friend has bought a Tricity Bendix 1400 spin machine…and well…basically my old faithful still gets towels drier! any ideas what speed my spin could be????

I think you have to be a little realistic here – 20+ years from a washer is an extraordinarily good run, and unlikely to be repeated by a modern appliance. The programme timer is obsolete, and has beem for some years. The door lock itself is still available, but will almost certainly require a wiring modification to let the new one operate correctly. In the meantime, cut the power at the socket, wait a few minutes, then deliver a sharp blow to the front of the casing next to the door handle. It may pop the lock free (it may not, but it might 🙂 ).
So, accept the inevitable, time to start looking at new ones. Overall spin speed is not critical, duration is important. Yours is an 800 and spins (from memory) for 9 minutes. Modern high spin machines tend to do the fast bit as short burst at the end…….
So, set a decent budget (£300 plus), decide what your requirements are (loads per week, what type of laundry, kids……) and start looking.
The modern Zanussis are OK, Bosch is better, our own ISE appliance is very good value for money, or go mad and buy a Miele. Their own documentation says that they expect the machine to last 20 years. BUT, they’re expensive.

I’ve had a friend of a friend take a gaze over the machine today just for an opinion on the situation. 2 bits of solder, 2 small pieces of plastic for the door (something had gone brittle and snapped so thankfully a new interlock wasn’t required :)) and it’s good as new. 😀 Thanks for the advice anyway chaps.

Does the door still lock when the machine is on? If not, be careful it could flood your kitchen.Or worse. 😯
Secondly, has the everlasting spin been sorted? If not, you could use a plug in timer to finish the programme at approximately the right time with a bit of trial and error.

It’s all mighty fine! The door does lock, I’ve just been and checked after you mentioned it. The machine now does the long spin and then clicks onto the finish line as it should and also takes the fabric conditioner on the final rinse.
I found the receipt for this machine earlier and it was bought in October 1982. Up to today it has never needed anything doing to it, It has been used each and every day for one or more loads since purchase, which is why I am reluctant to part with it as I know I won’t get a brand new one as good as this unless I spend a fortune. Not to mention that it is whisper quiet even on full spin and washes as good as the day it was bought.
