ModeratorIt is possible that this should be in Trade Spares or Technical but I have put it in here hoping that the kind sponsors of this forum will take note. 😉
I have used ARM20’s on and off for many years, the massive undercutting by GDA on the gen armatures price meant that, like most people I mainly used gen until recently. I have always found the ARM20 to be as reliable or even more so than the genuine article, sometimes a little noisier but other than that OK.
They do however have one flaw which I have advised my main spares suppier about on more than one occasion. The drive pulley is not fitted far enough down the shaft. In 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of cases, if you fit the belt into the pulley grooves, it rides on the very outer edge of the drum pulley or even overhangs the pulley. It is an even bigger problem if you have to fit it to a GDA machine that has the last version of the pecker mechanism, the inboard one that presses against the pulley instead of the belt. The pecker often misses the pulley altogether and slips past the armature shaft. Whoever manufactures these needs to obtain a couple of old original armatures to compare, we are only talking of a few millemetres, but as we all know, that can make all the difference. 😆

All Hotpoint/Creda/ Electra/Indesit etc that have the GDA motor. Genuine armatures have become very hard to source (at a sensible price 😉 )
And have been declared obsolete by the Indesit Company for some time now.I have one or two machines that are running fine with Qualtex ARM 20’s fitted over 15 years ago, but on those you had to fit the drive pulley yourself with the two split pins provided. It is only since Qualtex started fitting the pulley in production that this misalignment has occurred.

I have fitted them to old, 800 spin 1850’s more than 25 years old and to 1200 spin WM models without any problems whatsoever.

Make sure that they have the right tacho magnet though!
An analogue tacho magnet is different to the digital magnet. I would suggest re-using the magnet off the displaced armature to be sure.

I have used 4 of the 5 ARM20s delivered in the new batch and am pleased to say that they line up perfectly. Looking at the shaft at the pulley end, the pulley could be driven on a further 2mm, but there doesn’t seem to be a problem. Bearings are now ZR instead of ZZ, which is a nice little touch.

The ARM 20 does not come with a magnet, so unless you do swop the old one over it will not work very well. 😉 😆July 12, 2006 at 9:55 pm #171678iadom

Perhaps as well. 😥 I have to say that historically I have found ARM 20’s to be at least as reliable as the gen, although always seemed as little noisier.
Had one today that I fitted only three months ago, it was making a fearsome noise due to the bearings coming loose on the armature shaft, to loose to loctite. 👿

Before fitting the ARM20, it is important to mark the front and rear bearing housings and stator, to ensure full alignment on reassembly. If these are not correctly positioned the motor sits on its mountings slightly ‘twisted’ and will not line up alongside the adjustable bracket correctly. The result being too much strain on the motors ‘pulley side’ bearing which soon overheats and fails! 😉

I fit on average a couple of these every week,, must be well over 2000 fitted in past 27 years, bearing failure rate under warranty virtually nil.
Have to go now, have to show my grandma how to suck eggs, 😉 🙂 8)

Easy Jim, I wasn’t suggesting for a moment you didn’t know how to install an armature but merely adding to a thread that many may read and take note of. 🙂
Please give my regards to your Grandma by the way 😉

A QUALTEX REP TOLD ME RECENTLY THAT THEY HAVE CURED THE FAULTS ON ARM20 NOW, AND ARE ACTUALLY MAKING THEM FOR HOTPOINT.
