My Zanussi Jetsystem 1200 FJ1296 (8 yrs old) has just started behaving oddly. First, early in the water filling part of the cycle it suddenly tries to do a full-speed spin, crashes about a bit and then just auto-steps through all the controller positions one every few seconds until eventually stopping at A with the clothes wet and soapy.
When you try to hand-rotate the drum it makes a ticking noise going in one direction.
I found a thin black ring of metal about 3cm across with stubby rectangular protrusions like the teeth of a cog lying underneath the machine – don’t know if it has fallen off something.
Any ideas anyone ?

It sounds as though the tacho magnet coil has come loose. Remove the plug and tilt the machine backwards, the clip you have found is supposed to secure the Tacho coil into the end of the motor. It is sometimes possible to refit, although you may also need to tighten the tacho magnet that may have come loose, thus pushing the coil off.

You pointed me in exactly the right direction: on sliding the tacho sensor out of its housing I found that the magnet had unscrewed itself and was loose. Screwing it back onto the motor shaft and reassembling seems to have done the trick – smooth washing cycles again. Just as well ‘cos the build quality of replacement m/c’s is terrible… Many thanks for the help.
