ParticipantMy partner got covered in petrol and I put the clothes in the washer.. daft idea I realise now.
The clothes didn’t come clean and now the washer reeks of petrol too. Is there anyway to save the washer?
I’ve tried running empty washes through but it doesn’t seem to be having much luck.
Thankyou for all help in advance.

Try a maintenance wash with a good quality detergent such as Ariel, run the machine on hottest wash possible usually 95° with a normal dose of detergent without clothes in. Leave the door open after use, the smell should die down in time.

Make sure it is Ariel powder or tablets in the green box, the liquid or Ariel Color powder or tablets do not contain bleach which should help the cleaning process.

Hiya, so is this green box Ariel better to use in general? I’ve usually bought Surf in the past. Not through any informed choice, the vast range of stuff on offer just confuses me.

Hi Dawsong,
Yes, in my opinion it is… by a country mile.
I sat for days testing Ariel against the competition and there’s a big difference between all the brands but Ariel was definitely superior to all that I tested against, including Surf and others.
It’s really pretty simple, but I know exactly what you mean about detergents being confusing as it’s just a bewildering array of them on the supermarket shelves.
What you need is a “Colour” powder or liquid for coloured items. This is because these do not contain bleach and so don’t fade the colour out the clothing.
And, you need a normal detergent which does contain bleach for whites, so that the garments get white and not creamy coloured.
In both instances I’d recommend Ariel, the green box and the purple box and that way it’s simple.

P&G’s premium detergent is “Ariel”. Their value ranges are “Bold” and “Daz”.
Unilever’s premium range is “Persil”. Its value range is “Surf”.
Liquid detergents contain no bleaching agents, so white articles will become dull and grey.
Like granny used to do, wash whites as a load; brightly coloureds as a different load; and darks/blacks as a different load again.
Be wary of placing red articles into the dark load; the dyes will transfer, causing pinkish blotches on dark clothing!
Incidentally you must never wash petrol-doused clothing in any washing machine! There could be a fatal explosion!

I have to correct you there, some liquid detergents do indeed contain a bleaching agents, unless formulated as suitable for colours that is. 😉
Ariel for example produce a liquid and ‘liquitabs’ where the ingredients are the same as their powder and tablet range.

Sorry Martin you’re wrong. 😕
No liquid detergents contain bleach as there are technical issues that cannot be resolved in doing it. It’s a chemistry thing.
Ariel liquid as opposed to colour liquid contains extra brightners to improve the performance on whites only, not any bleaching agents. And those components are different. I cannot say what other manufacturers do as I don’t have the data to hand but I do know that we had a problem last year with a customer using one of the Persil liquids where, when the lady got to the last third of the bottle the machine over-foamed. With some investigation it turned out that some components sank to the bottom of the bottle and, unless the bottle was shaken before every use, this would happen all the time. Pity nobody told the customer that and of course she assumed that the machine was faulty. And I have to admit it baffled me as well, eventually I had to get the detergent tested to resolve the issue.
I have been told that much the same issue would occur putting bleach into a liquid as it would sink, only then you’d get the last third of the bottle being basically pure bleach.
As for liquidtabs, I’m not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure why there’s no bleaching agents in them, but I seem to recall a conversation about the chemistry of the casing and the liquid as being issues that couldn’t be resolved. I have also been very reliably informed that, due to the chemistry issues, that it is highly unlikely that a liquid will ever be produced that contains a bleach or bleaching agent.

Anyway, as I said, thanks a million.
