ParticipantThe appliance concerned is a hotpoint mistral plus 8596P (popular on this forum I see)
Usual problem re the freezer works temp. -22 but fridge temperature erratic goes up to 25 the occasionally works and goes back down to normal before going wrong again
I read all the relevent threads on your most helpful forum.
Cleared a mountain of fluff/dirt underneath having removed the lower plasic tray cover. Also checked that the fan was working at the back of the freezer which it was and that there wasn’t a large ice build up.The problem persisted so i was about to change the thermistors when I noticed something else which is why i am posting and hope I can get a little advice before calling someone out.
When powered on apart from the above described problem the unit appears to be leaking a weird smell, not burning but makes the room seem misty and it gave me a bit of a headache. this is not apparent with it switched off. Suffice to say it’s left off at the moment.
Is this likely to be a coolant leak, is this a common fault, and likely to be an expensive repair?any info here would be most appreciated.
Thankyou

If there was a coolant leak it’s very unlikely to get cold at all to be honest, certainly not down to -22 anyway 🙂
It’s more likely the fan at the bottom/rear next to the compressor is blowing bacterial smells around especially as you disturbed the “mountain” of gunk underneath, I doubt it’s much to worry about.
An engineer’s visit would be able to tell for sure of course:)

Thank you.
The smell was not apparent until after i cleared all the fluff. was worried i may have damaged something causing the leak. As i read on another thread that it uses butane as a colant is that right??
If its just bacteria would that make the room misty? thats what worried me.
NB how can i tell if this fan near the compressor is working properly?

Your model uses R134A refigerant (not butane) unless the compressor has been changed from the original ?
The compressor fan should run when the compressor is on, you can see it throught the front grill normally, again it should be fine as the freezer wouldn’t get cold enough generally.

Thank you again for your help.
I’ve found a local engineer from your site and will contact them 2moro (will let them know your site recommended).
Hopefully it’ll be just the thermistors nothing more expensive!
