    Hi
Can anybody help, I have a Hoover WDM 120 the problem is that the MOTOR seems to slightly rock back n forth as If it is trying to turn but doesnt seem to have enough power ?? this happens thru the complete cycle ( wash & spin ),
I took the belt off the motor no load on motor and the motor ( armiture ) spun but when I held the shaft of the armiture I could hold it & stop the armiture from rotating the motor seemed very weak ? hope this helps , I seem to think the windings are gone but only guessing, can anyone help .
    Thasnks

    1. CHECKED BRUSHES = OK
    2. MODULE LOOKS OK ? NO BURNT COMPs ETC

Motor armature I would think? One or two of the segments will look burnt or different from the others……New motor required!

Is this machine under 5 years old as you may get it repaired under the manufacturers parts Gtee. Put back as you found though, otherwise Gtee will be viod.

Re: Hoover WDM 120 Motor / Armiture struggles to turn ????

I had another look at the machine the program in use at the time was a woolens wash , I changed the program to spin cycle and the same happened BUT this time I helped the big wheel at the back of the machine by turning it while the motor was trying to go into a spin & it worked but was a bit sluggish at times although once it gained speed it worked fine spun the clothes, the reason I have added to the reply is if the armiture or the motor is at fault then WHY ? did it spin all be it with a little help from myself ? I dont doubt you guys but before I purchase a motor I want to be sure . can anyone shed abit more light on the subject ?

    Thanks for the replies

When you did get it to spin, was the armature (in the motor) arcing and sparking at all?

For future readers – Do NOT do this. You risk losing fingers at the very least.

The armature in this motor will have a cooked winding, resulting in very poor starting torque. With a load in the machine, the motor may make a rather distinctive noise – “Ong….”.

The motor is p/no 06015503, and email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk
    for prices and ordering.

My area of expertise is brown goods electronic repair, but I have had a washing machine here suffer the same problem in the past. It was due to the starting capacitor which is usually mounted on the inside of the washing machine case and is connected to the motor inputs. In conjunction with a starter winding in the motor, it creates a resonant circuit producing a phase-shift between starter winding voltage and mains voltage entering the main windings in the motor, producing a much larger starting torque which is required when a drum is full of heavy wet clothes, while giving the benefit of a motor which can spin at high speed. It’s often referred to as the “start-up and running capacitor”.

The description of the drum moving side to side slightly is identical to the symptom with my washer. The lack of torque being due to the capacitor having failed (most likely low in value or open-circuit) and therefore the out-of-phase extra kick not being provided by a resonant circuit dependent upon starter-winding impedance and capacitance (provided by start-up cap).

Buy yourself a new capacitor and I reckon all will be well. Hopefully! 🙂

Chappers perhaps doesn’t realise the machine in question is a BRUSH MOTOR and not an INDUCTION MOTOR. Therefore there is no CAPACITOR fitted or required to solve this problem, thanks anyway! 🙂
