    Hi

The above machine as you will know, is getting on a bit – but a bit of an old warrior that has done really well. Also it’s not too complex and I can generally maintain it myself (change brushes for example without binning the whole motor). However, I’m not an engineer and need a bit of help.

My wife insists that it is not cleaning the clothes as well as it used to – and I must say I agree. Stains that you would expect to come out of the children’s clothes are not -and the clothes generally don’t seem as clean as they should. Washing the clothes in the mother-in-law’s newer machine gets them much cleaner and removes simple stains. It seems to be getting progressively worse.

Can anyone throw any light on this at all? My initial thoughts are that there might be a filter tucked away somewhere that I don’t know about. If such a filter was blocked then maybe the dirty water can’t get out before the rinse water comes in? Or perhaps the water level controller might be up the spout? In which case the same might apply – that the machine does not empty properly before it fills up for the rinse.

Is this possible or am I dreaming? Any suggestions on how to sort this would be gratefully received.

    Cheers

    Doug

There a filter in the sump, between the drum and the pump. It will be full of water, and make sure the power is off first!

I’d also check if the machine is heating properly ❓

If the heater was faulty on this machine then it would not advance to the end of the cycle unless you have the economy button selected. This machine is more likely to overfill than underfill.

Have you changed detergent, what temperature are you washing on, do you use the economy button ?

Depending on the type of pump fitted it could be an intermittant pump failure. If the pump has a visible plastic fan then it should be OK if it is running, if it does not have a fan then this type of pump is prone to seizing with age and wear.

A: Same detergent, 40 or 60 degrees. Problem seems to be getting steadily worse. Program cycle finishes OK. We never use the Economy button (that means it doesn’t heat its own water right?)

Where is the pump located on this machine?

Thanks for the help so far – useful stuff.

The pump and the sump hose that Goatboy mentioned can be accessed from behind the lower rear back panel, be sure to remove the mains plug and arm yourself with a washing up bowl or a roasting tray and a couple of towels.

Also, the heater may not be working as previouly suggested; If this is the case, check the front glass of the machine whilst in WASH MODE to check if the machine is accepting water from the HOT pipe and not just washing the clothes in cold water.

As I have already intimated, this machine will not complete the wash cycle if the heater is faulty and the Economy button is not selected.
dougsta has already confirmed that the programme completes and the Economy is not selected. The thermostats are ultra reliable on these machines so I would discount those as a possible cause.

Just as a matter of interest dougsta which brand/type of detergent are you using?

To test your heater select 60° wash, ( no need to load it ) the machine should fill, then tumble for a minute or so. The timer should then advance one impulse and the motor should stop revolving and the timer motor will stop ( you will not hear the clicks but you may hear a faint buzzing noise). At this stage go to your electricity meter, depending on which type of meter you have you should see the disc rotating quickly or the red neon flashing at short intervals. It should heat up to 40° without tumbling.

The machine could be in dire need of a few “maintenance washes”!

These are washes done at 90 degrees celsius, without any clothes, but a normal (or slightly reduced) quantity of detergent.

If the machine has never been used above 40 degrees, this may be the problem.

This is all really smart stuff chaps. Thank you – you’ve got me thinking.

We switched to a non-biological detergent because my eldest daughter suffers quite badly from eczema – bio detergents seemed to make it worse. That was 4 or 5 years ago. There’s a good chance with all these blooming kids we have now (3) that the machine is clogged with some fat. A couple of washes with a good biological detergent might help to clear the fatty build ups in there. Lipases in the biological detergents should do that job (good idea to put in your sink drainpipe every now and again too btw).

Also, I will definitely try the 90C maintenance wash to clear any debris.

We use a bulk detergent from CostCo or Macro – perhaps not the best. My wife has gone out to buy a known brand – will report back.

Will also test the heating as you suggest – thanks. However, I believe that it is heating fine.

Thanks again – will ket you know how I get on.

Cleaned out sump, gave it a couple of 40C washes with a known brand biological detergent (no clothes), then gave it a 95C “maintenance” wash – (heater definitely working). We use biological powder now and clothes much cleaner – complete success.

    Thank you all

Just need to keep and eye on daughter’s eczema – so far so good
