ParticipantI bought a kitchen from MFI last summer. After a few months the washing machine (APM 8521) started to become very noisy and vibrate when it went on a spin cycle. I decided to call someone out to have a look at it as it was under guarantee. I have 5 years cover through the ExtraCare extended guarantee policy.
When the engineer arrived he pointed out that one of the legs had become loose. The locking nut had worked it’s way loose. I was aware of this because this had happened a few months earlier due to the vibrations. He said that the threads on the base of the machine that the legs screw into were worn and that this was due to incorrect fitting when the kitchen was installed. As a result he said my guarantee was invalidated.
I have a friend who is a MFI kitchen fitter, and it he did the kitchen installation last summer. I do not believe that the washing machine was incorrectly fitted. The machine was working fine for several months after he installed it. There were virtually no vibrations, and the machine was level.
If I take this to small claims court, is the onus on extracare to prove the washing machine was fitted incorrectly if they want to cancel my guarantee?
Any advise appreciated.

KeymasterI don’t know the T&C of the warranty and the specific clause to cover this, but it is not an unknown problem. The only thing you can do really is write to MFI and see what they are prepared to do.
And please only post a subject once. 😉

ParticipantWhen you say that this is not an unknown problem, what did you mean?
Is it a common issue for the locking nuts to work their way loose if the machine vibrates alot?
The engineer from extracare said that the only way the legs can become unstable was if the machine was incorrectly fitted. ie the locking nuts not put in place. He insinuated that the only way the inner threads, that the legs screw into, can become damaged, is if the locking nuts are not securely in place.
Please elaborate if you can.
Thanks

What I mean is that we often see the problem resulting from transit damage where the foot cannot be adjusted and, since it forms part of the cabinet, it is not a repairable item. To cause such damage from vibration would be, IMO, unlikely at best.

I have just had a call from MFI customer services. They are still adamant that the fault was caused by an installation issue.
They say that the locking nuts cannot have been tightened enough during installation. As a result the legs were not secure and the inner threads that the legs screw into have become damaged as a result of excess movement.
They say that the ONLY way a locking nut can become loose is if it was never tightened correctly during installation.
Would you agree that this is the case, or have you experience of the locking nuts becoming loose due to excess vibration?
