My boiler vented through metal tubing installed in an existing chimney.
This has left space which is ideal for a vented tumble dryer.
The problem I have is that the chimney pipe-hole is in the ceiling, about 4 metres vertical from the tumble dryer. I am worried about condensation & would have to create a bend (I assume).

Would it be possible to vent the tumble dryer using this way or should I just forget it and opt for a condensing tumble dryer?

What are condensor tumble dryers like these days compared to vented?
Our washing machine has a condensor but it takes aged to dry baby clothes. Thanks.

A couple of metres of hose going horizontally is the most you can use before encountering condesation problems. The draw from the chimney is variable, so cannot be included in the venting calculation.

Condenser dryers work pretty well these days – bear in mind that you get what you pay for. Electolux group products and Whirlpool aren’t bad, Seimens/Bosch is better and Miele is far and away the best (as reflected in the price!).

Re: Vent Tumble Dryer through Chimney

Thanks Penguin45 – If I bought a good Miele, Bosch or AEG condensing tumble dryer, how would these compare to a good vented tumble dryer?

I assume the drying time is much quicker with a vented dryer?

At a push, I could vent via an outside wall by drilling a hole etc.
but if a condensor works very well Ill go for this option instead.

On the better quality appliances drying times are pretty comparable. The difference is that you need to put a bit more effort into maintenance with the condensor – filters, channels and condensor units need to be kept clean to keep the efficiency.

Don’t be fooled by your experience with the washer dryer – the drum is too small in these to allow the clothes to “fly” properly in the hot air, and the condensing system using a cold water trickle feed just doesn’t work very well.

The vented dryer is still the simplest option, although getting a 4″ hole put through the wall is often a major headache!

Re: Vent Tumble Dryer through Chimney

Only buy a condensing dryer if you have to,theres so much more to break down on them,
Boiler engineers have large core cutters for boiler vents (hole in the wall) they might charge a lot but it should still be cheaper then the extra for condenser dryer,
phone a around for a engieer who needs work

Re: Vent Tumble Dryer through Chimney

    Thanks for your advice PMB.
I think I will buy a vented dryer and get someone to put the 4 inch hole through the wall with fly guard etc.

Condensor would be easier, just plug & go but so many people have had problems that I will opt for the vented.

    Thanks guys
