ParticipantHi guys, great forum.
I have a new WD640. One of the reasons I chose it was for the delay timer function so that I could dry stuff overnight on the cheap leccy. I have now found that the delay timer only works on the wash function, which isn’t a lot of use to me (why would anyone want to delay their wash start?) 😕
To make matters worse, no-one at Hotpoint seem to be able to tell me, catagorically, whether or not this is a faut or by design. One customer service bloke even said that some variants of this model have delayed drying enabled and some don’t. I’ve had umpteen washer dryers over the years and I’ve always been able to set a delay timer for the dry function.
Can anyone tell me if this machine is faulty or shed any other light on this issue?
Many thanks,

Hi Keith, as this is a fairly recent machine, and due to the fact that most manufacturers give the independant trade no help whatsoever, not many people here would be able to give you a definative answer. If it was possible to set a delay for the drying sequence only, I would think that this would be made clear in the user manual.
You have to bear in mind that what you have is Hotpoint with a large amount of Indesit bits in it, in particular the electronic controls and the dryer unit. The number of variations to Indesit machines as regards electronic controls is endless, they are also unfortunately extremely unreliable.
Although it may seem ridiculous, it is quite possible that some machines will have a function and some with the same model number do not.
If I do find any more info on this I will let you know.
What is the serial number of your machine?
Jim.

Hi Jim, thanks for the info.
I had a call from Hotpoint yesterday with the answer I was looking for, that being that *none* of their washer dryers have a time delayed dry function. This is ridiculous and wasn’t pointed out to me when I bought the machine so I will now contact Trading Standards to see how I stand legally. I believe the retailler may have inadvertantly misrepresented the machine’s features by not telling me (I bet even they don’t know).
I’m at work at the moment but if you’d still like the serial number let me know.
Thanks again.
Keith.

If that is the official line then the serial number does not matter. I am guessing that you bought it from a large, well known retailer. The staff in these places are only really interested in selling you a maintenance contract, anything else is way beyond them. You may pay a little more for the product but by using a local independant retailer you will almost certainly get far superior advice and service backup.

All of the local independant retailers went to the wall a long time ago here and we’re rather isolated to go elsewhere when you need something in a hurry. 😕

Hi
The idea of the wash delay is that you set the time to start the wash then set drying time ,machine will then wash and then go straight into dry cycle . When you get up in the morning its all washed and dried . Which means the washing is done with cheap electricity as well.

Hi Mike.
Are you sure that’s true of the WD640? I couldn’t find an option to make it wash and dry all in one go. Does it only do that in conjunction with the delay timer?

I have not seen a washer dryer that does not automatically follow a wash cycle with a drying cycle if both are selected. Not had a look at a WD640 yet though.

The operating instructions tell you how to wash, how to dry bot not how to follow washing with drying! How cr@p is that? 😕 I tried your suggestion and you can do it, so my workaround to just dry with the delay timer is to select the shortest wash programme (‘slow spin’, 13 minutes) and then auto-dry.
Thanks for your help.
Keith.
