Please can you clear up once and for all the position regarding the connection of a free standing gas cooker to an existing bayonet fitting.
I am of the understanding that non corgi engineers are not allowed to connect a new bayonet flex hose to a new gas cooker. A local ‘cowboy outfit’ is carrying out this practice. If this is illegal who do I report them to?Thanks

You are correct. Non corgi engineers cannot do this practice. This is classed as “work” on a gas appliance and therefore illegal.
To report them you need to contact the HSE.Greg

Q. Can I use a handyman or plumber for gas work ?
A. A CORGI registered installer with the required competence to do the particular work should always be used. By law (a) anyone (whether an employer or self-employed) running a business, e.g. a plumber, who carries out work on a gas appliance/fitting must be CORGI registered, and (b) any individual doing gas work must be competent to do it safely. DIY gas work could be dangerous and is likely to be illegal. Landlords must use only a registered installer for maintenance and safety checks on gas equipment provided for tenants use

Just to add to this
if a gas user needs to clean behind the cooker etc
they are allowed to “Unplug” and reconnect the flexi hose to the bayonet fitting providing it has already been installed by a competent person (eg a corgi registered fitter)Re: Gas cooker installations
Corgi require their members to Notify every Gas appliance installation and they will then issue a certificate the appliance has been installed by a registered installer. This certificate will be required for the Home Information Packs (HIP) which are being introduced early next year as a requirement when people sell there homes.

Do engineers need to be Corgi registered to work on gas/electric cookers etc? I have always refused to work on them as I am not Corgi Reg.Am I right ❓ 😕

I think the general census when this was discussed before is don’t touch even if you’re not actually doing anything illegal if only to cover your own @rse 😉

we had this disscusion with a corgi health and safety rep,
R.E. working in dual fuel cookers. ie repairing electrical parts …
you can work on them legaly, the problem arises if after a week/month a gas leak developes and leads to a fatality, you would be deemed as the last person at the cooker,
what the corgi rep said was that they would defend you in court as you have not touched the gas side, but you have to then convince a jury of 12 who has no knowledge of cookers that it had nothing to do with you..
this seemingly applies whether your corgi or not.
this converstation was about a year ago, and was in scotland, so the info might be old and might not apply nationwide ???…having said that, gas installers/plumbers etc dont realy want to touch the electrical side, and probaly dont have the electrical test equipment to test that electrical repair has been done properly and is plugged back into a safe circuit .
seems a bit of a mess, do you need to be corgi and have your 16th edition to satisfy the been counters ???..
