ModeratorA bit of a strange one this. This customer is a serial machine abuser ( nice woman though) Constantly removing loads of coins and other rubbish from machine. Her current machine is/was a Hotpoint WMA63, only four years old, had a new drum under warranty and in very good condition. Two weeks ago she called me complaining of ‘blue’ ink like marks on clothes. I removed a drum lifter to check inside the drum, checked the sump and although another collection of nails and coins was found, no remnants of a ball point pen or similar. I advised her that as far as I was concerned there was nothing wrong with the machine, and nothing in it causing these marks.
Being the sort of person who has more money than sense, ( hence the constant coin problem) she went out and bought a new machine last week, guess what, she is still getting blue marks on the clothes. It apparantly doesn’t happen every time, she has also changed detergents and fabric conditioner to no avail.I can only surmise that the water supply may be the culprit, but I have never seen ‘blue’ marks like this other than ones caused by ballpoint pens left in the machine. The inlet valve filters are spotless, and the fault apparantly only appeared within the past few months. 😕
Any suggestions.

This doesn’t look like that, it has only started happening in the past month or so. Also her next door neighbour is a customer of mine and they are not suffering from this.
The machine is in the garage and I suspect a certain amount of DIY went into the installation, could be something he has connected that is breaking down somewhere.June 3, 2006 at 7:09 pm #178335Martin

Possibly a fault with her tumble dryer? Maybe the washing comes out spotless from the new machine but her ‘old’ tumble dryer is really the problem?

Don’t think the TD could cause that, but you never know I guess, stranger things. 😕
On the surface of it it sounds like a dye transfer issue, I have not seen but heard before of a bust pen’s ink in a pocket causing similar transfer but other than that I dunno.
Any pics of the offending items?
I would not suspect the detergent or softner unless they were well dodgy.
Water supply, perhaps but from the mains as Jim says, if the residents round about aren’t getting the same then it’s unlikely but the DIY explanation may well fit the bill.

Marks are noticed before going into dryer, they do look for all the world like ink marks, although she said the recent ones appear to have a little bit of fibre within the stain ❓

Hi Jim
Does her proffession make her come into contact with chemicals??
I had similar with a nurse once, the chemicals deposited on her uniform were reacting with the detergent.Greg

Not sure she has a ‘profession’ , will ask her the next time I speak to her. She has agreed to let me have a couple of items of clothing and hopefully
‘someone’ 😉 will be able to analyze the offending marks.June 3, 2006 at 9:03 pm #178340gegsy
