ParticipantWhen on ordinary wash cycle or rotating the drum by hand there is clunking noise as if something is loose, seems to be in one area of the drum, it’s the kind of noise as if something like a bolt is loose and just catching the drum. The noise isn’t there on the spin cycle.
Please tell me it’s not something very expensive or terminal.
Thanks

Sorry, it sounds like the drum support is broken 🙁
If there is lateral movement of the inner drum inside the tub, it will probably be one of the legs on the drum spider that’s broken, or the bearing are goosed!

Thanks for the reply, there is no lateral movement in the inner drum at all, and the supports all seem fine having looked.
The noise is the same as the noise a plastic wash ball makes in a tumble dryer, just a bit more metallic sounding.

Possibly heater failure? It lies under the drum, quite close. These machines have a known problem with water level control due to the air bell filling with sludge. As a consequence, the machine can think it’s full of water when it isn’t. The heater is an immersion type, if it isn’t immersed it can a) fail, b) explode, c) buckle.
Worth checking out , with the power off, please.
The drum support is on the back of the drum by the way – you should check by trying to pull the drum towards you at each paddle position. The shock absorbers below the drum are not the drum supports.

Thanks Penguin45.
I am aware of the air bell problem thanks to this board, and have checked that and it’s fine clear and clean, so I think I can rule out the heater.
The noise appears to be coming from between the inner and outer drums and only happens when the drum is rotated at slow speeds, it spins and drains perfectly, in fact it’s working fine, but just with this clunking noise.

Maybe there’s a foreign body between the drums?
Or as Mr P has pointed out, maybe the heater has buckled?
