After recently cleaning paint brushes in the kitchen sink, paint and white spirit residue found its way into my Bosch SGS45E02GB dishwasher. This caused white staining and a strong smell. Prior to this incident there had been some water in the bottom of the machine but unfortunately I didn’t think anything of it.
The machine is under warranty and so I called Bosch Appliance Care. They sent someone along who replaced what turned out to be the faulty non return valve. The person also advised us to contact Bosch to seek repair or replacement of the machine because of the damage caused.
This we did but have been told by them that the action of cleaning brushes with white spirit in the sink has caused the EPDM valve to deteriorate and allow water into the machine. I should add that the spirit was diluted by running water – I have not actually tipped any spirit down the drain.
Could anyone throw any light on this issue or offer any advice. I am of the view that the valve would not fail in those circumstances but cannot find information anywhere. Many thanks for any help.Re: Bosch SGS45E02GB dishwasher/Cleaning brushes in sink
What it all comes down to Tony (the Tony Brown?) is that the initial installation is flawed in that water was allowed to run back into the dishwasher in the first place. The flap valve in the dishwasher is really only there to stop the last of the water being discharged from flowing back into the sump. Had it been correctly plumbed in, then the backflow from the sink should never have occurred.
I had this with a washing machine once and we could never get rid of either the smell or the paint stains.Re: Bosch SGS45E02GB dishwasher/Cleaning brushes in sink
If the non-return valve was working correctly then there would always be a quantity of water preventing the white spirit getting anywhere near it.
…or to put it another way this is consequential damage to the appliance as a direct result of a faulty part within it….
my advice, persevere with Bosch to get a replacement.

I’d have to agree totally with Mark on this Tony.
The manufacturer will say, quite rightly really, that had the machine been installed correctly then the spillage would not have been able to enter the machine in the first place so whether or not the non-return valve is faulty is essentially a moot point.
The reality is that there’s an awful lot of machines out there that are not installed correctly, we see it on a daily basis and it’s all too often never known about. Until you have a problem, like this.
The only thing you can do is try to reason with Bosch to see if they’ll do anything to help you.

As for replacing the m/c the manufacturer has no obligation whatsoever under the sale of goods act to replace anything.

Thanks very much for everyones replies.
As a couple of you have pointed out the machine is (I think) incorrectly installed in as much as the connection to the waste above the trap is a ‘T’ and not a ‘Y’.
I’ll get this changed over so the problem doesn’t occur again then decide whether to pursue the matter further.
