I have an intermitant problem with my Hotpoint Aquarius Washer Dryer WD62.
It wouldn’t go but I got it to start for a while by slamming the door quite hard. It is my guess that the door lock mechanism is at fault.
Has any one ever repaired one (i.e. might cleaning the switch unit help? It is an intermitant fault so wonder if it just needs some TLC).
If the lock mechanism needs replacing are there any tricks that I should know. I was thinking of working up from underneath to get access to it.
Any help from you would be very appreciated.

No maintenance is possible to the door switch, it can only be replaced. This is what you want

I would access it through the front myself.

Thanks for the prompt reply. You say to access it through the front. This baffles me a bit. How do I gain access through the front – I realise it is just to the side of the rubber seal; do you mean that I remove the seal and work through there?

Correct, slip the retaining band and peel back the lip.

Excellant – I’ve got the switch unit out. I have tried a circuit test across the C and L terminals and can get no circuit with the slider moved over (the action that would be caused by the door being closed). This I guess is the proof that it is in need of replacement…
(Out of pure curiosity there is a third terminal marked N which is shown by the diagram on the switch unit with a zig-zag line to the L terminal – my gut instict says neutral but this doesn’t seem to make immediate sense… I am just curious and a bit dense….)

It’s a bi-metallic device, using a heater to bend a strip of metal, therefore the heater needs a live and a neutral supply.

New switch fitted – one very happy wife and some nice clean clothes….
Just for the record – I was able to access the switch simply by removing the appliance top and a long arm down to its location. There is then enough wire length to bring it out to the top of the machine and work at it from there. This alleviated the need to tamper with the drum seal at all.

I (and most other appliance engineers) would always do it by removing the door seal, as described, because washing machines are usually under a worktop. Maybe it’s laziness 😉 but it’s mostly so we don’t have to risk damaging floors to remove the machine. If the machine isn’t under a worktop, your way would be easier 🙂
Of course anybody doing this, must unlug the machine first!
