There is a screeching noise at the start of the rinse cycle on my machine. I have a favourite cycle set up to rinse swimming gear where I just do the water saver and time saver rinse cycle so there is no wash water pumping out first. The noise only happens with this cycle, not at any other rinse phase in any other cycle. Would a diag show what the fault is and how do I do this? Machine is about 5 years old.

I honestly have no idea 😀 . It’s most likely mechanical, so the diagnostics are unlikely to offer anything – they look mainly at the electronics for timings, loadings, continuity etc.
So – drain pump? Slight leakage will go through the bearings and cause noise, as will the tub bearings themselves. There’s nothing else by way of moving parts…….. Suspension dampers can creak and squeak, but it changes with drum speed.

I had a similar experience with my GW609AU, it turned out to be a cracked former on the stator. This allowed the iron laminations to rub on some of the magnets in the rotor. It sounds like it is almost time for a new stator.
If you don’t want to shell out the dollars you could try grinding off the high spots on the magnets with an angle grinder. Be very careful where the waste lands as it is magnetic and will stick to metal. My GW609 ran for another 6 months before the shaft seal gave way and flooded the stator and shaft bearings.

If your stator and rotor are rubbing and/or noisy…the cause is most likely bearing failure. A failed bearing woth “play” will allow the two to make contact and start wearing out your magnets. So change the bearing before the motor is damaged.

Pardon the stupid question, but how do you get to the guts of this machine? Do you turn it over and to which side? Or doyou go in from the top somehow? We were expecting to see a back panel. :stupid:

Motor and pump access is from underneath – flat on its back is the common way. If drum is to be removed, the top deck will have to be removed – two screws on the back of the console will release it.
Mrs P would have removed parts of my anatomy if I hadn’t fixed it after six months………… 😀

Hi, it’s me again. We haven’t gotten around to fixing this yet. I found that if I filled the machine with enough water and allowed it to agitate a little, then the noise didn’t happen. Then I changed back to not wasting the water and just spinning the clothes. Worked OK for a while, then the noise started again. It would seem to me to be coming from the pump as the bowl doesn’t move at the start of the pump out phase. You’ve said that the stator might need replacing. Do you think this is the way to go? I’m in Geelong, Victoria. Can any Australian members recommend a repair person in this area?

Pump is replaced as an assembly. Stator is part of the drive motor, which you say is not running at the “squeak” point, so that isn’t the problem.
