    Hello

Can anyone give me some good unbiased advice about my fridge freezer? Its the 50’s style retro sort half fridge half freezer I believe they retail around £1500. I’ve been told the compressor has gone and this will cost about £180 to replace and refit.

    Is this a fair price?
If I bought a compressor myself would it be relatively easy to fit myself?
would I be wasting my money, only for something to go wrong with it in a year’s time?
Are you paying for design rather than quality of appliance? (eg it doesn’t auto defrost)
As I could go out and buy another one for around £200 I’m in a bit of a dilemma.

But the appliance is only 5 years old if I paid this money would get another 5 years out of it?

I am very loathe to take such a nice looking thing to the dump.

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance

The price for replacement is pretty much OK to be honest. It’s not a DIY job though as the system has to be opened and regassed etc.

You are to an extent paying for the styling, these are made by Gorenje for Smeg and a standard unit of similar size would coust around £250 normally.

As far as longevity goes, that’s anyones guess really but the compressor is the most expensive component to replace so you shouldn’t be faced with another bill that size again unless the replacement fails but it should have some form of guarantee on it.

    Hope that helps 🙂

    Hi

You cant fit it your self because pipes have to be disconnected so you would need a refrigerant recovery unit and a chargeing station to refill with refrigerant.
    This is an experts job.

Thanks for the advice. The man who quoted said he’d guarantee it for a year, is this about normal/do you know of anyone who would provide a longer guarantee?

12 months is standard to be honest. You could ask if he will offer a longer guarantee for a higher fee perhaps ? 😉
