ParticipantMy Mother-In-Law’s WF440P has stopped working after an RCD trip caused by a toaster fire (don’t ask). When it starts all the LEDs flash 3 times and the selected cycle begins. After a random number of seconds the cycle stops and the LEDs flash 3 times. The cycle then restarts until it is interrupted by another restart.
I don’t think the RCD trip is significant although reading through these posts there is a bit of a theme.
I assume that it is an EPROM fault although the machine is only 13 months old (funny that).
I received no sympathy or assistance from Hotpoint, just confirmation that they would charge me £35 for a service visit plus £55 for a repair visit.
Please could anyone advise if it is almost certainly the EPROM, I don’t mind trying a new one but I don’t want to get into the situation of rebuilding the machine bit by bit to track down the fault.
I have also sworn to never, ever give Hotpoint any more money.
I also get the impression from this site that Hotpoint build washing machines with any Hotpoint/Indesit/Landrover spares that they have kicking around so I would like to be confident I have the right parts.
If not it is down to Argos with £200 for something decent and anyone that could use this machine is welcome to it (Reading area).
Thanks for any help.June 29, 2006 at 10:36 pm #180494iadom

It would be extremely foolish to throw this machine away when the parts are covered by a five year guarantee, it does sound as though the control module may be faulty, you would be unable to repair this yourself with an EEPROM.
Grit your teeth and let them sort it.
The cost of the module complete with the correct EEPROM, which you would not pay for, is almost the same as their labour charge but if you buy one and fit it, you may find the fault is elswhere and will have wasted your money.
A few useful sayings, “you only get what you pay for”, “pride comes before a fall” & “don’t cut off your nose to spite your face” 😉

Hi iadom,
Thanks for your reply. You are right, it would be criminal to scrap this machine with such a small fault, however I think you missed the phrase “Mother-In-Law”.
I can get a half price Samsung from Argos for £200, which should do (are they any good?).
I still object to paying around £80 for a controller to rectify a faulty EPROM. This should not need replacing as it is by definition programmable, the next logical step is to replace the whole machine, hence the Hotpoint gets binned.
With reference to useful sayings:
You only get what you pay for, but with Hotpoint you carry on paying despite the free parts.
In my experience it is lager rather than pride that comes before a fall.
I do not need to cut off my nose to spite my face, it is fairly spiteful already.July 2, 2006 at 9:57 pm #180496iadom

Don’t be fooled by advertising, and ‘half price gimmicks’ the Samsung is only worth £200.00 in the first place.
I would do anything for my mother in law, unfortunately she is now in a comatose state due to a massive stroke. I would never allow her to be daft enough to throw away a 13 month old machine because I was to stubborn ( or any other adjective you would like to insert here) to pay the labour charge knowing that all the parts would be completely free for the next four years.
I almost feel like breaking into song with a rendition of a Who number from their famous Rock Opera. 😉

Further to Jim’s post I would like to add that we recently wrote off a three year old Samsung due to a six week lead time on out of stock parts. Korea is a long way away. Shame really, as the washer actually works rather well.
The old adage that you get what you pay for has never been so true.
