Seeing as Martin is reverting to his youth, I thought I might mention two of todays jobs –

First, Mr Hookeys Parnell dryer stopped turning. Expecting the usual Hotpoint badged belt job, I turned up to find a small enamelled cupboard on wheels, claiming to be an ID55, which appeared to made in 1964. Mr Hookey (85) was most upset that it had gone wrong. Took the back off, to find no less than 4 pulleys and two belts. The drum drive had gone. Small V belt – shot down to B&C Car Parts and finished up with an alternator belt for a Fiat Panda (I think), which was a perfect fit. Then the old codger wanted to argue about the bill………

Last call was to a rental property with a Hoover front loader – an A2018 no less, made in 1978. No soap drawer, weird internal fill hose, 940E timer. Fortunately, it was just blocked, cleared the pressure system (like we always used to do) and away it went. Mind you, I fitted an inlet valve to this 3 years ago and told the agents to replace at the earliest opportunity. Entire flat has been redecorated and refitted with IKEAs finest since I was last there – except for the bloody washer. Oh, well, they’ll be getting the bill at the end of the month.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

    Re: Oldies

Spookily enough I have a customer that not only owns a Parnall ID55 but uses it daily (here shown in her kitchen)

She worked at Parnall in Yate during the war in their munitions factory. After the war Parnall turned their production to making washing machines and later making this very successful tumble dryer.

As far as I gather from my customer, she was given this machine as a wedding present from all the staff she knew at Parnall back in 1958. And it has been used ever since……

Can’t see a Haier diswasher getting to that age… unless someone forgets to unpack and use it. 😉

    Re: Oldies

i went to two oldies this week a burco tumble dryer the pulley which the 2 belts went round at the back of the drum was broken, for some reason i had one in the garage.

the other an A2018 hoover, 1980 i used to see a lot of these the pressure switch tube was blocked.

i try to condemn every haier dishwasher i see, the door hinge springs are rubbish as is the whole machine you could cut your fingers off on the edge of the door panel wearing welding gauntlets.

Been digging in the vaults then? Went to a Creda 37042 spinner last week, no spin, found a pair of Carter motor brushes in the darker recesses of the van and away it went. It’s just priceless sometimes – these old dears love their old machines.

    Re: Oldies

Hoover W2054 single tub repair last week – outlet hose was split.
Mind you, the only parts in the machine were the motor, a belt, the wash impellor, sump and drain hoses. The machine was unmarked. (I also removed the original ‘C’ shaped cardboard transit packing from around the motor. The belt used to use the weight of the motor to tension it. The machine had worked perfectly like this for all this time). Yet she has used it twice a week, every week. This was its first and only fault.
No heater; no on/off switch; no pump (gravity drain – AKA drop the hose down into a bucket). Amazing!! 😀
She was delighted that I could repair it ( :rolls: ) and it lives again.
    I miss those days………. 😥

    Steve.
