ParticipantHELP!! Our d/w sms4472gb/20 will not fill with water. I replaced the water inlet valve ( £44.00 to £58.00 from bosch dealers but £29.50 for Hotpoint unit which is identical) but no joy. When switched on it makes a humming noise and thats it. Not a lot to go on I know but any suggestions what to check please.

Very likely the float on the metering tank will be stuck or sump hose blocked or both!

Tank is on the lefthand side and the hose you need to remove is the 1″ diameter black one which goes to sump.
Unplug before attempting this :plug:

Hi, I have checked both- the black i” pipe is clear and the level meter moves freely to operate the microswitch. I did notice that the bottom section of the tank is rust coloured in places??????? when re assembled I tilted the machine to an angle of 45 degees and the float moved smoothly.
Switched on same humming noise for a minute or so then nothing.
After reading other comments I thought I should check the PCB in the door and low and behold there are some brown marks round two of the “gizmo’s”. They are C12 & R17. Are these a DIY replacement job????

Oh dear! 😳 I forgot that this model has a ‘Delay timer Module’ 😳
Yes indeed this will be your problem, a replacement Module (Part No 151604) is available from the BSH website (http://www.bshappliancecare.co.uk)

Hi Martin, I looked at the site you suggested, had a bit of a shock when I saw the price. Before I go down that road is it a possible DIY job. There is a Maplins near by.??????

Yes £86 is a bit steep but worth the expense on such a well made machine that could last many more years 😉

Hi Martin, I agree it would be worth it to keep the d/w in service for a few more years but money is a bit tight right now and Maplins tell me that the resistor thats gone will cost 11p or so.
The problem is the coloured markings are not clear and they can’t identify the value of the resistor. Can you tell me the value of R17 please ???

I wouldn’t have a clue and it’s not shown as a value on the wiring chart either. Unless someone takes a look at one in situ thats working OK I’m not sure how else you would find out. 😕
Buy hey ! 11p eh? Why not buy several that look similar of differing values and try each one in turn to see if it works? A 44p investment may be your making? 💡

If the delay timer has failed preventing the machine from operating then you wouldn’t get any humming noise at all.
Sounds silly but have you checked the obvious like taps not turned on or fill hose kinked?
Is the humming noise the drain pump running perhaps….or is it the sound of the inlet valve trying to let water in?

Thanks Cliive, I know the tap is on but I’ll check the hose for kinks in the morning. Incidently where can I download a manual???

Take the inlet hose off the tap. Is there a powerful flow of water? Does the inlet hose have a rubber washer in it to seal it to the tap with a grit mesh in the middle of it? Is it blocked? Have you disconnected the inlet hose from the valve (with it reconnected to the tap) and checked for good water pressure at the valve? The rusty deposit in the airbox suggests :- silted inlet hoses, blocked grit mesh, silted or non – functioning tap. The blue handle of these taps quite often turn on the ‘d’ shaft without turning the tap internals. 😉
As ever, power off and machine unplugged before attempting a repair. :zap:

Hi, thanks for suggestions. No problem with the tap/hose on water inlet. As a last resort I will try repairing the delay timer board. If that does not cure the problem then I’ll have to decide between an engineer or a new machine. (wife getting a bit tetchy).
Many thanks to all concerned for your help.Regards
