I’ve just started to research a replacement for our aging, and now dead, DS 21 TCR.

This is a slimline, free standing dishwasher approx 12 or 13 years old, and has been providing good service, subject to unclogging the siphons every now and again.

My problems stem from not being able to get at all dimensions for any given dishwasher. Sure you get the width, height, depth, and even these aren’t that accurate, often forgetting that switch gear or bulging mouldings for the front door add another couple of centimetres to those quoted. The real problem is the height between the underside of the top spray arm and the bottom plate rack when the upper basket is in it’s lowest position. Then finally what height can be accommodated in the upper basket.

I’m not about to go and replace all our crockery, because the gap isn’t big enough.

I’ve measured a few free standing units in the various high street shops, and this varies between 23 and 31 centimetres. We need a minimum of 25 cm gap between the underside of the spray arm and the bottom basket, plus a 25 cm gap between the upper basket and the roof of the dishwasher. How do we go about getting this information?

Lastly, in the years we’ve used our dishwasher it appears that the design gurus have been and mucked about with what now gets placed inside the washing cabinet. Namely the plumbing for the upper basket.

Our DS 21 TCR has a smooth back panel which means we can place baking sheets, or large glass chopping boards in the bottom basket and have them sandwiched against the back when you close the top basket. Having the plumbing inside prevents you from doing that which seems crazy to me.

Does anyone know a brand of dishwasher that still has a flat back wall to the cabinet with the water jet coming down through the roof of the cabinet?

Or, I’ve seen some dishwashers that have what I assume is a flat cutlery tray right up against the roof of the dishwasher. Could I also place baking sheets/chopping boards on that?

Oh, I should say that the space available to us for the replacement looks as though it’s only suitable for a semi/fully integrated machine. We could have gone for a free stander but whoever built the kitchen placed the hot & cold pipes half way up the wall just under the plug socket for the dishwasher 🙄 So that means we’ve lost 4 cm of the depth.

So external dimensions we can accommodate are:

    w60 d57 h87 (including switch gear and door mouldings 😉 )

Any help greatly appreciated. We must have wasted about 5 hours dishwashing already this week 😯 and about the same walking round the shops.

Budget is £300 or less, and we want to use dishwasher tablets.

    Thanks
    Hyde.

The nearest machine I can come up with for you using the criteria given would be the Bosch SRS55L22 slimline machine with overall dimensions of 45 wide 60 deep and 85 high the depth is total as the controls buttons are small microswitches the plate size it can accomodate is 25cm with top basket at lowest position and 30cm at its highest. The upper basket will hold 21 and 26cm depending on adjustment. All dishwashers to my knowledge have upper spray arm feed at the back of the machines.

As far as built in appliances are concernd with the budget you have available you will be down in the Indesit area not good at all I`m afraid 😉 . Personally I would have the plumbing moved and go for the Bosch.

Re: Need help replacing a Zanussi DS 21 TCR

    Many thanks for the info.

Moving the plumbing isn’t an option as it would require me to dismantle one third of our kitchen units to get anywhere near each end of the plumbing run.

Our dead dishwasher is a free standing 45cm model, so I was hoping to get something full size this time.

I had found that my budget was perhaps a little too low. Accordingly I found this machine:-

    http://www.sainsburyskitchenappliances.co.uk/productinformation.aspx?ExtCampaign=AffiliateWindow&ID=3630&ExtCampaign=AffiliateWindow

The Neff S5453 looks to fit the dimensions I have, but again, no idea what size crockery it will accommodate, or the reputation of this manufacturer.

    Any experience here?

In addition is there a price break at which, generally speaking, you get a much better machine?

    Many thanks
    Hyde.

Neff is part of the same group of companies as Bosch. Apart from a couple of range style cookers they specialise in built in appliances and are held in high esteem throughout the industry. Like Bosch they to come with a two year warranty subject to registration. The S5453 is a good all round appliance and will accomodate the same plate size too.

When buying a built in appliance I would reccomend that you visit a local independant retailer who will be able to offer you the best advice, a delivery time that suits you and a good after sales service.

Re: Need help replacing a Zanussi DS 21 TCR

    Thanks again.

Local retailers for built-in appliances appear to be very thin on the ground in the Basingstoke area 🙁 Unless of course I’m looking in the wrong places 😳

Currys was the only one that displayed built in appliances and none of those were Neff.

Tried Reading Warehouses (actually in Tadley), Currys, Comet, Homebase, MFI.

The Neff web site shows 3 retailers, two of them in the above list, which isn’t encouraging, so I’ll try the outstanding one, “Two Guys” and see what they have.

    Cheers

OK, increased the budget again and bought a Miele G 1140 SC Dishwasher from http://www.appliance-world.co.uk/.

Excellent service, right down to the delivery guys who brought it in an unwrapped it and talked me through the various pipes and installation requirements.

Also downloaded the extended warranty form from the Miele web site so now we have five years worth of cover for no extra cost 😀

We’ve been using the machine for a few weeks now, and it produces excellent results. I have seen a few negative comments about the time it takes to load the cutlery basket in the top of the cabinet, and whilst it does take longer, the unloading is so much quicker since all like cutlery can be lifted out in one go and placed back in the appropriate drawer section. So what you lose on the loading, you gain back on the unloading.

    And it’s soooooo quiet 8)

Many thanks to all who contributed directly to my post, and those whose other comments elsewhere about this brand led to make the leap to this machine.

    Cheers 😀
