ParticipantHi
A couple weeks ago my Hotpoint WMA58 washing machine was rattling when spinning as if something was under the drum. After trying anything obvious to see if I could find anything I gave up in the hope that it would just go away on its own.
I put a load on tonight and it was acting pretty normal, but I have just gone into the kitchen and discovered that it hasn’t spun and is still full of water. Tried switching it off with the off switch and then putting it back on to the spin cycle, but the lights come on and nothing happens.
Have I totally knackered it now? How can I get the foreign object out? Is it underneath somewhere for the drain sump? Is it gonna be an expensive job and will it be one for the professionals?
Hope someone here can help me, I have lurked here before when I had problems with my tumble dryer and fixed it according to the post I had stumbled across in the google search, so thanks for the help from back then.
Thanks

It is possible that a foreign body has moved from the drum into the drain pump. You can drain the water out by lowering the grey plastic outlet pipe into a washing up bowl or similar. The pump itself is not too expensive on these machines and replacement or simply unblocking should not break the bank. Try the link in my sig to see if we have someone who can help you, please be sure to remove the plug if you intend to investigate further.
PS. I always tell my customers ( even if some take no notice ), there is very little to ‘service’ on a modern washing machine, but a leak or a noise should be attended to immediately, :lesson:

Thanks Jim, you know, now that I think about it, the scraping wasn’t as noisy tonight as normal, so the foreign object may just be in the pump like you say.
Where is the outlet pipe on this machine do you know? Underneath or round the back?
I will get my brother to come and help me tomorrow with it and make sure that he unplugs it.
Thanks for your help, and any noises will be investigated immediately in future, though I hope not to have any more. 😆

there doesn’t appear to be anything blocking the filter, so I reckon I am going to have to call someone out. Have checked the link here and there are no repairs people in my area.

Just to add, it seems to go on now, but only for the Fast Spin or Slow Spin cycle. However, it doesn’t appear to go into spin mode, just goes through a wash/rinse type process, and the scraping sound can’t be heard anymore. If I try to use any of the other programmes it just makes the door lock sound and then there is a very quiet hum.
Its annoying me now, I just want to get the stuff out of it, but can’t until it empties lol.

It does sound as though you may have something in the pump itself, bra wires, small pieces of wood, nails, screws, hair bobbles, bits of plastic curtain hooks and other such rubbish left in pockets can all work their way past the filter and into the pump itself.

Thank you, is it easy to get them out of the pump or best to call an engineer out? What would be the rough cost expected to pay to get them to fix it?
Thanks 🙂

Every thing is easy with the correct skills, you should ask any person you intend to invite in to fix your machine what his/her charges are. Any reputable firm will be only to glad to tell you. As I said in my first post the cost of a new pump is not excessive and it may just need unblocking.

Good News! It’s working and you were right Jim, it was a piece of bra wire in the pump 😳 – so I thought I would let you know.
The guy was great, told me how to care for my machine properly, etc

No Greg, there wasn’t anyone local to me on here. Got them out the yellow pages in the end.
But thanks to all who helped. 😀
