Hi,
I’ve had an AEG OKO lavamat 16800 turbo for four years and I went to switch it on the other day and there was a bit of a humming noise and then a faint smell of smoke. After this the machine shows no signs of life at all. The display is blank and none of the lights light up. I’ve changed the fuse in the plug and this has made no difference.
Out of curiosity I took the lid off to investigate and everything looked very neat and tidy (fine piece of engineering I’d say). On the right hand side of the washer, near the front, there was an enclosure that looked like it contained a PCB so I took some photo’s with the digicam and then proceeded to unplug all the wiring to take a look inside. Sure enough there’s a PCB with (amongst other things) something that looks like a relay on it. The relay is about 12mm wide by 25 long and stands about 30 tall. It’s got a clear plastic lid so you can see inside and I can see at one end of it is what looks, to me anyway, like a tuning fork. The inside of the plastic near the tuning fork is discolured by smoke/carbon so I assume that this is where the smokey smell came from.

So, my question is this. Does this sound like an expensive repair and if so, do you have any idea how much. My local curry’s is doing a Zanussi ZWF1221W for £229 and although it’s not a washer/dryer I might be better off biting the bullet and scrapping the AEG and getting this.I’d be really grateful for any advice,

I doubt it’s the relay on the PCB to be honest, that is probably the heater one which will show signs of “arcing” after a few years.
Smoke/smell is much worse normally, probably one of the pump/motors or a capacitor.
Power off if checking further :zap: or better still I would ask an engineer to take a look, as you say it’s a nice piece of equipment and is worth repairing if possible 😀

Thanks for the advice, I’ll get it looked at before doing anything as drastic as scrapping it.

Still haven’t got anyone out to look at my washer/dryer yet but after what you was saying about blown capacitors I took another look and, just like you say, there is indeed a blown capacitor on the PCB (I would send a photo but I can’t figure out how to attach images to a post). There is also an IC which looks like it’s got a bit fried (because it’s right next to the blown capacitor). The IC looks like a standard part (I found the manufacturer’s website on the web). It’s a TOP209 from Power integration INC. Do you reckon this is repairable or am I looking at a new PCB. If it is repairable, have you any idea what a reasonable price is for the repair.Cheers,
