ParticipantI know many engineers, even companies, would not enter a house if there was only an under 16 year old present. Personally I’ve never worried about it, but is there any regulation or law regarding such a thing?

If the child is under sixteen years of age, they are not legally responsible for any occurrence that takes place whilst you are in the home. Both you and the parent/legal guardian are.
However, there is no law existing to dictate whether they should be left ‘home alone’ or not.
Any judgement will be made based upon if they have been put at risk.
I certainly would not, and indeed have previously declined to, accept responsibility for a child alone in the house.
The ramifications could be enormous.August 4, 2006 at 2:47 pm #184047admin

My own personal opinion is that I will not attend or enter a property if the person is under 14 or if they look under 14 then I ask to make sure.
If any of them come to the door wearing tee shirts or nighties then I request them to get dressed before entering the property.
Now if its the students ect….. Then thats a different story !!! 😆

It’s the black handprints everywhere that annoy me

So no, I won’t enter a house with a miner in it 😆

never enter a house with a minor alone….the ramifications are horrendous……let alone a miner ! coal dust ! no wonder the machines never work “up north” …..but seriously I would never ever dream of doing a job with just a minor in the house…….walk away…thats my two pennyworth …..well hello everyone anyway !

never ever! nor should work alone as in “fetch the key from where ever” YOU ARE AT RISK! it is up to you to prove inocence not the customer to prove guilt, no matter how inocent you are CALL BACK LATER besides that way you stand a better chance of getting paid.
would you let your kids alone with a stranger? who checks to see if that nice Mr rerair man is not uncle groper? ronnie the rapist or pintch it pete all the talk about N V Qs and government regulations mean nothing when no check is ever made about the bod that knocks the doorwilf

KeymasterSadly it’s the culture we live in now Andy, we just have to deal with it. My own sentiments are that, if I feel (or one of the engineers does) that the person is not capable then we walk.
It’s not worth the risk.

How would you get one in the house in the first place 😀

On a serious note, I would never go ina house without an adult prescence, it is open to so much inference of inproper conduct.

I often work in peoples houses on my own. There are still quite a few people up here who never lock their doors so they just ask me to let myself in. Quite often customers leave the house to collect children, fetch money to pay me etc. Would some of you refuse to carry on working if the customer left the premises? Similarly, I have often started a job alone in a house and then the children have arrived home from school. If builders, joiners, plumbers and other tradesmen imposed such restrictions on where they were willing to work, most working households would never be able to get jobs done. :rolls:
