ParticipantI’m looking for a decent quality free-standing larder fridge and matching frost-free freezer.
I had been considering the Hotpoint RLM84X and FZM84X (stainless steel finish) mainly because of the large capacity and modern look, but it seems that I’m payng a large chunk of money just for the plastic silver finish because the same fridge and freezers in the white finish are cheaper by around £200 each!
So next on my list is the AEG A75238GA1 Frost Free Freezer and matching AEG S72348 Larder Fridge, although the capacity of the freezer appears less than the Hotpoint.
What are your thoughts on the AEGs in comparison to the Hotpoints mentioned above? Should I be considering any other models/brands? I’m looking to spend no more that £1000 for both and the freezer must be frost-free.
I really like the look and size of the Smeg FA40X4 larder fridge, but the freezer isn’t frost free.
All opinions appreciated, thanks.

Hi aleem
The Hotpoint range of refrigeration is probably the best IMO. The interior design is excellent with plenty of flexibility. As for the price a quick google search reveals the same sort of price differential as ourselves about £70 on each appliance. Your`e local retailer should be able to offer the same.
You should have change from the 1K too 😉HTH

ParticipantThanks for your reply Don.
How do the Hotpoint range compare against the AEG ones in terms of quality/longevity?
Thanks!

Participantmore than likely both italian made using the same brand of compressor.
pay your money and take your luck.
in my view the day of paying £1000 and getting a machine that lasts 20 years have long gone if anything you would poss have more problems than buying say a matching beko set that would cost £500.
And thats the decission anybody has to make if it looks nice to you buy it theres not many single brands out there the 2 brands you mnention hotpoint are indesits and aeg are zanussi both italian and italy seems to be the market leaader of white goods.

ParticipantThanks expertcat, what you say makes sense.
I remember going shopping for appliances with my dad when I was a kid and my dad wouldn’t buy things if they were “too light” 😆 And he’d pay the extra to get things that he knew would last. Like you say, those days are largely gone.
I guess I’ll go with my initial impression, and that is that the AEG feels heavier :rolls: 😆 so thats what I’ll go for!
Thanks again 😉

I bought both the tall AEG fridge and matching freezer you mentioned two years ago when I moved house. It was the first time I’d contemplated spending roughly £1000 to get a fridge and freezer. I thought AEG was supposed to be a reliable brand but I’ve had recurrent faults with the fridge since I bought it. After only a few days water was pooling in the reservoir at the back. An engineer replaced the door seal. A few months later the fridge frosted up right up from bottom to top. After numerous visits I thought whatever it was was fixed. However after just under a year the frosting problem has returned. AEG inspected it and decided that it wasn’t worth repairing but want me to pay £221 for a new one. This amounts to around 43{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the purchase price (Sainsburys & Boots.com). I’m not at all happy. I know not every AEG fridge is destined to break down but the one year manufacturer’s guarantee hasn’t really been much use to me as I’m still with a faulty ‘new’ fridge. Consumer’s rights state that you can expect appliances such as these to last 6 years i.e. a reasonable a mount of time so I’m now looking into following that up. We are now using a 10+ year old small, very cheap Beko fridge as back-up. Basically I’m not really convinced anymore that the more money you spend the better the product!

ParticipantI think people look at it still that way the more you pay the better it is just ask around to see what has happened to all these manufactuers. I was aeg trained some 20 years ago when aeg was a german company now its own by electrolux and hardly make nything in germany anymore its all italian they have the manufacturing base now and coming up behind ate the chinese and koreans.
If its got pink and yellow lights on it and you like it buy it.

Further to my posting of yesterday I have now had another phone call from AEG, who have ‘reassessed’ my case and are now offering me another new fridge, free of charge this time. This was however after I emailed a national newspaper asking for their advice on the situation. I would therefore recommend to anyone with any similar problems with appliances to pursue the matter rather than accept any offers that they feel are unacceptable. Try the consumer group ‘Which?’ for advice, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau or indeed national newspapers for some support when things go wrong.

ParticipantWe’ve had the pair AEG larder fridge and freezer for some months now and are very happy with them. Teh capacity is excellent; the versatility of the shelving in the fridge is really good, and the spare parts service was very rapid (I wanted an extra door shelf and two extra wine racks).

ParticipantJust an update on this. I plumbed for the AEG matching larder fridge and tall freezer. They were delivered on th 15th of August and installed around a week ago.
Yesterday I noticed the temperature of the fridge was on 10 degrees. It was pre-set to 5degrees. I tried switching it off and back on, but no change. The compressor doesn’t seem to be kicking in. The water evaporator was almost full of water.
I telephoned the AEG service centre this morning at 08:30 and they said they’d send somone round sometime on Monday.
Cleaned up my very old LEC fridge freezer that has been stood outside for a week and it started up no problem.
Just hope I don’t have re-occuring problems with the AEG!
