As part of the machine revolution, every single electrical appliance in my house is commiting suicide. Latest to go is my washer drier.
Very specific problem with this, hopefully somebody will know exactly what is wrong. I think I’m going to need a new controller board, will be happy to be told otherwise.
Symptoms:
Whenever there is any demand for the drum to spin (Wash, spin, dry), the drum will do one of two things:
1. Accelerate immediately up to maximum speed (even if it is just supposed to be agitating). Then stop. No more movement. This all takes 1-2 seconds.
2. Nothing at all.
Motor is one of the newer ones with the less fragile brushes. They have a mile of wear still left on them.
Timer knob will happily go round, machine fills and drains ok.This thing is about 4 1/2 years old – is there some sort of hotpoint parts warranty on it?

Earth fault trough motor most likely culprit. Possible wiring fault can give similar symptoms.
Power off as you investigate.

I’ve checked all the wiring point to point (with the machine unplugged) and can’t find a problem with it.
Could you explain more what you mean by “earth fault”? Do you mean it’s not earthed or that the motor is earthing itself at some point in it’s rotation when it shouldn’t be? The motor seems to run absolutely fine for it’s magnificent 2 seconds.
I may be getting massively ahead of myself here, but but to me it looks like either the control or feedback circuitry for the motor has failed. I’m not really of a mind to diagnose this any further with the top off for obvious reasons.
If I could eliminate the speed sensor on the motor as a problem I’d quite happily take a punt on buying a new timer/controller. Is there any way I can thest that easily/safely?

If you have the FHP motor then on rare occasions the tacho magnet on the end of the motor shaft, behind the small push in circular plate can come loose causing these symptoms.

Ah, I do indeed have the FHP motor and that’s exactly the kind of helpful hint I was looking for. Does that plate just pull off? I was eyeing it suspiciously last night but could not see an easy way to remove it.

No way on earth that plate is coming out – do you use a small bearing puller?
definitely something loose behind it.

For the sake of completeness…
Fixed it, and for my favorite amount of money – nowt.
Problem exactly as iadom said, Managed to re-mount the magnet using extreme dexterity throught the hole in the midle of the plate without removing it.
Eternally grateful, If I need parts or a service guy in the future this will be the first place I come.
