I completely emptied the sump at the bottom of our Zanussi DW 401 dishwasher by bailing it out. When I restarted the program the sump refills with water but the machine is making a funny noise and when I opened the door to take a look, the water does not appear to be circulating through the top spray bar. The water in the sump does not cover the element. Should it be covering it? The element is getting very hot, presumably because it is not being cooled by circulating water. Is this a fault with the main pump? Thanks in advance for any advice.

The element should not be covered, however, the water should more or less cover the base of the cavity. It may be underfilling or the motor may not be getting up to full speed.

For underfilling, have a read of this:

Yours is the blue tube version.

Motor problems are harder to identify and you should consider pro help. Perhaps you could expand a little on the strange noise – it could well be related.

    Power off if investigating,
