    Because he’s the one that set me to thinking of this asking what articles were wanting written…

    In an effort to beat Google et all at their own game I’ve been working on the site and some of the text over the past couple of weeks as I’ve had a bit of peace on occasion to do it, so there’s been some subtle re-writing to improve the site’s ranking. Primarily this has focussed around keyword density within content.

    Don’t worry if I’ve lost you there, all you need to know is that the more we use certain keywords in any articles or posts the better indexed and, ergo, the higher up the search results we go.

    The benefit of this is increased traffic and an increase in spares enquiries as well as a marked increase in repairs@. I know Mark, don’t bother I know you’ve not had much, which is weird as you are in a high internet use area.

    Anyway, getting back to hitting the Penguin with a club…

    I have, for a long, long time considered an entirely new section within the articles giving the lowdown on each brand point by point as we see it. To do this we need to list and write the following…

    * Brand history where available, Wikipedia will be useful there
    * Products produced or sold under the brand
    * Official site link, if there is one
    * Pricing point
    * Quality from our point of view
    * Logo (I can do that bit)
    * Spares availability and pricing
    * Fixability
    * Models or range recommended
    * Models or range to avoid

    With me so far? Each one will obviously feature a spares and repairs@ link as well as the author and a link to the author’s website. If you don’t have a website (Chris ;)) then get one, tis easy that bit.

    Now, to give you a sense of the scale of this little project, here’s a list of the manufacturers on the spares page. There are still more out there, I’m sure I missed a few and there are a few more in repairs@ but they’re pretty much insignificant…

    AEG – AGA Rayburn – Ariston – Asko – Asea – Atlant

    Bauknecht – Baumatic – Belling – Beko – Bernstein – Blomberg – Bosch – Brandt – Brittania – Bompani – Balay

    Candy – Cannon – Caple – CDA – Continental Domestic Appliances – Cookers – Creda – Crosslee – Cuisina – Carlton – Continental Domestic Appliances

    De Dietrich – De Longhi – Diplomat – Dualit – Dyson – Daewoo – De Longhi – Dimplex

    Electrolux – Elica – English Electric – Esse – Eurolec – Ebac – Electra – Eurotech

    Fagor – Frigidaire – Finlandia – Firenzi – Fisher & Paykel – Flavel – Fridgemaster

    Gaggenau – GEC (General Electric) – Gorenje – Glen – Goldstar

    Haier – Homark – Hoover – Hotpoint – Hygena – Hanseatic – Hinari – Hitachi – Homebase

    Iberna – IDEA Cooker Hoods – Ignis – Indesit – In Sink Erator – ISE

    Jackson – JMB

    Kelvinator – Kenwood – King – Kompact – Kuppersbush

    La Germania – LEC – Lacanche – LG (Lucky Goldstar) – Liebherr – Lofra – Leisure – Luxor

    Maytag – Mercury – Miele – Matsui – MFI – Micromarc – Micromark – Mitsibushi

    Nardi – NEB – New World – Neff – Naiko – NEC – NEI – Norfrost – Normende – Nilfisk

    Ocean – Onyx

    PABL (Premium Appliance Brands Limited) – Panasonic – Parkinson Cowan – Philco – Philips – Proline – Parnell

    Samsung – Sarena – Scholtes – Servis – Sharp – Siemens – Smeg – Sovereign – Stoves – Scandinova – Schrieber – Sebo – Snowcap

    Teba – Tecnik – Teka – Tricity Bendix – technogas – Technolec – terim

    Valera – Viking – Viva – Valor – Vestfrost

    Waterline – Whirlpool – White Knight – White Westinghouse

    Zanussi – Zerowatt

    I can obviously do the major ones myself as I can do the ones that I am or have been an agent for in recent times. Many I dont’ know about.

    Dave can help us with the spares bit, as in how easy, how fast and how much I’m sure. But Dave is too busy with other stuff to be doing this as a project for himself.

    I can edit and rewrite to make them Google-friendly, no worries there. But to do the entire lot on my own is a hell of a task and, frankly, I need help with it from you guys if you don’t mind helping out with it.

    What I suggest we do first is get a template in place to work to, if we use Word that’s fine but do it with no line spacing so it’s formatted like a text document as I have to format anything for HTML.

    The format that Nuke takes this in is as follows…

    Title – A few words, up to about fifteeen, no more but I’d suggest the brand name used ffor that only.

    Sub-Heading – This is the short bit of text you see on the article’s index pages.

    Header – This serves as a kinda short intro, we can skip it if required and jump straight to….

    Content – This is the body of the article. I can get images etc in there but not scripts.

    If you’re up for it this would be a quite astonishing accomplishment and a coup for us to accomplish it, but we need to have a common format and also a work plan to get through it.

    Nicely though it will allow us to really highlight the bad boys and give a simple URL to our thoughts on any brand we get asked about rather than constantly answering posts on any particular brand, or at least reduce it.

    So, you up for it then?

    Re: Blame The Penguin!

    So you want each of us to chose a Brand, write a brief article on only that brand including the points you have listed, on a common template?

    if thats the case, I want Philco and Asko as I am pretty well up on them, history wise at least. Not sure anyone will be up for Zerowatt though!

    Yep, that’s the basics of it Mark.

    That’s great as I’m a tad jaded on Philco. 😉

    Don’t know much about ASKO but I can easily do Zanussi, Hoover, Candy, Smeg, Diplomat/Hygena/MFI amongst others.

    I know a little about Zerowatt as well. 😉

    Re: Blame The Penguin!

    Hehe.. it’s a big project Chris, a bit like Wikipedia for the whitegoods industry really.

    Anyways, template here in Word format pre-formatted it should work okay. I’ve tried to keep it as simple as possible so as not to bamboozle you with HTML code but you can see the command for BOLD text and it’s much the same as here only using . Doing that saves me a load of hassle.

    And when that was uploaded it looks like this

    Now the idea is of course that the old bit surfer comes across these well written works of fine literature and clicks to buy bits from Dave or get a repair from repairs@. That is if I don’t work poor Dave to death before we’re done. :snigger:

    When and if they can’t fix it themselves then of course repairs@ is what we’ll advise, even if we get a sniff that the punter’s not sure as we do now in the forums, or if we feel they’re too much of a danger to themselves. You get the drill I’m sure.

    That’s the plan anyways. 😕

    I moved this because we need help methinks. There’s a lot to do here to make this work so I’m scrounging for help. Meanwhile I’ll get on with as much as I can.

    Even if you can’t or don’t want to help out on this can you check the potted history and advise of any errors or omissions that you see in these articles please?

    Thanks Ian that’d be great.

    Martin is on the case with BSH. I’ll tackle Zanussi later, maybe Samsung and LG as well.

    I was saying to Martin, it’s really, really hard to be unbiased in these articles as we generally love ’em or hate ’em. 😉

    Re: Blame The Penguin!

    Er, how does one use the sample template given that it’s full of SMEG?

    Delete the Smeg stuff. 😉

    I did it that way so you could see how it was laid out and how you have to use two line breaks (two taps of “return” or “enter”) so it’s easy for me to format the document to HTML.

    I just use the one document and re-write it as required deleting what I don’t want.

    I’ve done a few more now. 😉

    Re: Blame The Penguin!

    I am a little tied up with family illness ATM to do real justice to this project but was just doing a bit of digging, bear in mind that I joined Hotpoint (BDA) in the late 60’s and left in the 70’s when it was then called Hotpoint Ltd. The Hotpoint name and history is so long and involved that it would take an absolute age to compile, given that my involvement was for only 11 years. I vaguely recall being told that a company called Canadian Light & Power was involved at an early stage ( Google brings up references to them in the 1930’s and before) I am almost certain that the name ‘Hotpoint’ came about because the company was the first to develop an electric iron that got ‘hot’ right to the toe or ‘point’.

    What does frighten me even more in my very brief research is that I have actually done service calls on a couple of these machines.

    This machine was first produced in 1923 😯
