A friend asked me to replace the belt on her washing machine as the drum was not turning. The belt was ok but the motor sounded as if it had insufficient torque to turn so I checked the brushes and found they were needing replaced. However, after replacing them the motor is still not turning. I tried taking out the motor and cleaning up the commutator to no avail. If I give the drum a helping hand the motor will turn ok. There is nothing wrong with the drum bearings and the motor turns intermittently with the belt removed. There is a bit of a cordite smell around the machine so I thought that maybe a capacitor was on the way out but the only one I can see appears to be a noise supressor on the mains input. I can hear relays clicking around the control board when power is fed to the motor and there are no obviously blown components on this board. The machine looks as though it is good enough for a few more years service and I hate the thought of telling my friend to throw it out for what could be a trivial problem but I don’t think it would be cost effective to call an engineer because the machine is over 4 years old. Can anyone give me advice?

Classic armature failure – the motor will need to be replaced.

You are in serious danger using the test procedures above. You risk losing your fingers if the motor does kick off and electric shock. Please don’t do it.

    Thanks Penguin45,

Sounds like time for a new machine. I know my test procedure was a bit risky but ELCB was installed and I was using my foot on the back of the drum in a mid-wash cycle and keeping my fingers well away. Still, not recommended!

off the top of my head i cant remember but is this the version with the pcb in the little white plastic housing on the bottom left if so whn th brushes go it tends to damage that module and some soldering on one of the relay joints is required it is normally hard to spot but if you look close it could be that please unplug and watch your fingers washing machines are cheap compared to losing a digit or 4
if in doubt ask for an engineer there is a link here for your area

    Hi DDSDDS,

The PCB module on this machine is in a white plastic housing but it is located at the top front of the machine next to the program selector. Would it be worth taking a look at this or is the problem you describe specific to a model with the PCB at the bottom left of the machine?

    Regards

specific to the one at the bottom i am afraid prob motor itself is faulty
unless the brushes are incorrectly fitted

Re: Hoover H160E-UK drum not rotating

I did not pay much attention to the position of the brush holders when removing them and then found that each could be refitted in one of two positions. However, the condition of the screwholes and graphite deposits indicated which position the holders should go so I’m nearly positive the brushes are fitted correctly. I think I will suggest a new machine!

    Thanks

    Tom
